CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

“You’re volunteering?” Shalton repeated, curiosity turning to surprise. “What in tarnation are you on about?”

“I’m a bit more than meets the eye.” Maggie half-smiled.

“Not only a pretty face.” He shook his head. “I know you’re a powerful sorceress, Miz St. Clair—but shifter powers? There’s never been a lady shifter—not to my knowledge, anyway.”

“You’re right. It’s…a bit of a weird situation. Strap in.”

He chuckled. “I’m always game for a good story.”

Maggie tapped her fingers on the table, ignoring Matt’s discomfort in the back of her mind. She couldn’t afford the wait, and James had shown himself to be far more trustworthy than Cyrilla had so far, so… In for a penny, in for a pound. “You know that about a year ago, I lost my twin brother in a car accident.”

“You told me—although I also remember hearin’ about it at the time.” Shalton frowned. “A real shame.”

“Thank you.” She swallowed—it was still hard talking about Matt out loud, even though he was still alive—for some given value of “alive.” “He was a shifter and a powerful one at that. A wolf shifter. We worked…really well together.”

“I see. No, I don’t see. Still lost in the sticks, Miss Maggie.”

She laughed. “I haven’t finished yet, so I’m not surprised.” She leaned against the back of the chair, watching her fingers drumming on the tabletop rather than looking at him. “A few months later, I started developing new magic. Which is weird for naturally magical folks, as I’m sure you know.”

“I do.”

“Yeah. I started getting super powerful senses. I could smell what kind of coffee Blake was putting on in the morning, and I could hear someone walking down the street before I could see them, that sort of thing. Eventually, I figured out how to shift myself into a wolf.”

Shalton blinked. “D’you mean to say that you gained your brother’s powers after he died?”

“More or less.” Maggie shrugged one shoulder and finally met his eyes. “I still don’t know how it happened, but that looks like the case. Through some freak magical accident, I’m the first female shifter.”

“Well.” He sat back and looked at her. He did so for long enough that Maggie started to feel awkward, and she was about to say something when he broke the silence himself. “No wonder Cyrilla was so intrigued by you, Miz St. Clair.”

“Heh. You’re not wrong. According to Cole, I took up a lot of her brainpower in those couple of months before she disappeared. Anyway… Now that you know what I’m offering, what do you think? Would that be enough?”

He let out a slow breath, thinking. “To tell you the absolute truth, I don’t know for sure. Funnily enough, I’ve never tried the blood of a sorceress with two completely different kinds of magic. But at a guess, I’d expect you’d be just what we need.”

“Great,” Maggie said, sitting up straight and steeling herself before she chickened out. “So, how does this work? Do you, like…” She tilted her head to the side, exposing her throat to him.
