Erik sat at the head of the conference table in the main lodge as the sound of construction echoed from outside. He had already dressed in a suit, and the tie pressed his neck tightly, choking him. He looked up from a stack of ledgers at Yago, who sat next to Vernon. “Are you kidding me?”

Yago flushed. “I know it looks bad.”

“Bad?” Erik’s ears heated. “The mine is nearly bankrupt. Copper is at an all-time high right now. What the hell happened?”

Vernon tapped his phone that he’d been using as a calculator. “What happened was we lost half our workforce, if not more, and then made some bad business deals. It wasn’t Yago.”

“Then who made the bad business deals?” Erik growled.

Yago shook his head. “It doesn’t matter. I’m the Alpha for at least another hour, so any deal is my fault.”

“I would like to know who’s running the mine into the ground,” Erik said.

“My brother,” Vernon admitted. “He doesn’t have a head for business, and for quite a while, he was dating somebody from the Ravencall Pack.”

Erik stilled. “Wait a minute. What? Your brother has been dating somebody from the Ravencalls?”

Vernon shoved his phone across the table. “Yes, and so we sold copper to them with the agreement that they would work in the mine for a reasonable wage.”

“And you gave them the copper upfront,” Erik said, shaking his head. “You had to suspect them of the poisoning, considering their industry is creating spices and liquid vitamins. Yet you trusted them like that? Seriously?”

“Yeah,” Vernon muttered. “We didn’t suspect them of the poisoning until recently when they began attacking us once in a while.”

Erik looked at Yago. “I’ll buy you out of this bankruptcy.”

“I don’t own the mine,” Yago said.

Erik pressed a finger beneath his right eyebrow as a migraine tried to kill him. “All right, who owns the mine?”

“The pack does,” Vernon said.

Well, that didn’t make a bit of sense. “If the pack owns the mine, why are some people living in mansions and others in cardboard boxes?”

Vernon winced. “Like I said, it hasn’t been managed very well, and that is my brother’s as well as Butch Hollowgale’s fault. I didn’t get involved with the books until a couple of years ago. By then, it was too late. We’ve been trying to crawl our way out of debt, but we need more workers. It’s that simple.”

“You need an influx of cash, as well,” Erik muttered. “Does the pack own the mine as an LLC?”

“No,” Yago said. “It’s just well known that the pack owns the mine. That obviously isn’t how you do it.”

“No, my family owns Volk Mining.” It was one way to ensure that the pack stayed strong, and also that power remained in the family. “All right. Vernon, come up with a fair figure, and I’ll offer to buy the mine. I’m not sharing it with the pack. I want full control of it. You’re going bankrupt if you don’t sell to me.”

Vernon flushed but nodded. It
