Chapter 15

Nancy had woken up with a temper, and that temper had steadily pulsed inside her as the day went on and they got out of the orange patch. She wanted to blame the temper on Edmund, except the man had no idea about what she was going through: specifically, the way the kiss had ignited a deep hunger from her, the frustration of him going back to sleep, and the way that frustration only grew as she’d been left in her half-sleep state lamenting over the loss of what could’ve been.

Aching in her body, aching in her soul—aching in places she wanted him to touch and kiss, just like he almost had last night with that insistent mouth and those firm hands.

But Edmund wouldn’t because that had been a fluke. The man could kiss, all right, and the man could touch her until she lost all sense.

And he couldn’t seem to remember most of it.

Somehow, in some sort of twisted reality she now found herself in, the realm had affected Edmund enough that he’d given in to whatever dream he had before realizing it was a dream and backing off instantly. In that case, backing off meant stopping the kiss, removing his body from hers, and apologizing this morning, with all the formality of the meticulous clan leader he was. It established that it wasn’t either of their faults, assured that nothing would change and they would readily move on from such a lapse.

It didn’t help with her mood at all.

“Are you sure you’re fine, Nancy? We can stop for a bit and rest, find something else to eat. I wouldn’t recommend the fruit droppings here, but I think the bland-colored tree fruits are fine, as long as I assess them first.”

“I’m fine,” she replied promptly, carefully. They’d been walking for a good few hours now with no sense of danger lurking about, but the forest scenery hadn’t change yet, and the mountain ahead still seemed so far away.

“Is it because of—”

“You already apologized for last night, so there’s no need to rehash it.” Struggling with the mood and the closeness of his voice—because they had to stay close—she forced herself to look up.

Watched him watch her, a steadiness to his gaze that seemed to caress her skin.

Damn it.

“I got that,” he finally replied, glancing away. “I’m just…”

“Worried I might slow us down with my lack of enthusiasm? Don’t worry because that won’t happen.”

There was a thoughtful pause.

“Nancy, I discovered something.”

She halted at his words, ready to jump in case danger ensued. Nancy whirled to face him and found the man giving her a look of utmost amusement. “What?”

“You’re really, really irritable when you don’t get what you want—in this case, a good night’s sleep.”

Oh, of all the lousy, unfounded conclusions—

“I don’t always get what I want, and I’m not always this irritable. I’m not irritable.”

“Yes, you are,” he countered matter-of-factly, striding ahead and leaving her no choice but to stalk after him. “And yes, you mostly do, unless I stand my ground.
