Chapter 23

Ben

Something about the way she left bugged me, but it took a few days to figure out exactly what it was. I had gone to work each day torn on how I felt about our second liaison in the diner, wondering exactly what it was that was making me not just be happy about the situation. When I finally figured it out, it put me in a funk for the rest of the day.

It was the way she’d reacted when Cooper started making noise. I understood the situation could be embarrassing if we were caught, and it was certainly one of those moments where adrenaline coursed through you and you put your clothes on faster than ever before, but still. The look on her face was something I didn’t expect, and I wasn’t sure if I could handle.

Kathy had to be able to handle the fact that I was a dad before anything else. It wasn’t like I was a casual kind of guy. I couldn’t just date and fuck or whatever. If I was going to do this, it meant introducing Cooper at some point and making this a real thing. I had mentioned we needed to sit down and have an adult conversation about what we were doing, and now I knew it was even more imperative.

As the morning wore on and the business was a little slower, I figured I could take a few minutes to whip out a text. Most of the customers were there for coffee and donuts, so my job for them was already done. I went into a corner of the kitchen, away from prying eyes, and sat on a bucket.

I pulled out my phone and got her contact information up, opening up a text message.

Hey Kathy. Could you stop by the diner tonight?

Once I saw that the text was labeled “delivered,” I moved on, refusing to sit there and wait for a response. Next was a call to Nina.

“Hey, Nina,” I said when she picked up.

“Hi, Mr. Price,” she said in her cheerful way. “Is everything okay?”

“Yeah, everything’s fine. How’s Cooper?”

“He’s great. We’re making pottery at the moment.”

“Awesome,” I said. “Could you keep him a little later tonight? I have something I need to do. Maybe I could drop by your mom’s place to pick him up?”

“Sure, Mr. Price,” she said. “We were just saying how we’d love to do a popcorn and pizza movie night. Build forts in the living room. Would it be okay if I ordered him a pizza?”

“Absolutely. I’ll send over the money through your app. Get whatever you want.”

“Thanks, Mr. Price. Cooper, do you want to talk to your Papa?”

“No, thank you,” his little voice said. “I’m busy at the moment. Tell him I said I love him, please.”

“I assume you heard that,” Nina said.

“I did. He’s a stinker sometimes. Thanks, Nina,” I said.

As I hung up and stood to go back to the fryer, where I had some hash brown orders up in the window now, I thought about the way Kathy had reacted to the sandwich I’d created with the new mayo.
