Finn and I do all the things stupidly adorable couples do when they’re happy. We go to restaurants and to movies and take walks around his neighborhood until just before curfew. We make out in his car, and in my car, and under the bleachers after school (because he’s stopped skipping class and started talking about college and studying graphic design and even sketching whenever we hang out). Winston apologizes to me, and so does Daphne, and the four of us hang out on weekends sometimes.

One afternoon after school, I sit at the desk in Finn’s room, going to town on the story about the barista boys who fall in love (which in no way, shape, or form I’m basing off of this relationship or anything like that…not entirely, anyway). Finn lies on his bed, feet hanging off one side, head swooped back on the other, headphones over his ears, scribbling something in his sketchbook. When I walk around to see the picture, it’s Spiderman, dangling upside down, throwing a peace sign.

“Looks like you’re trying to spider it up yourself,” I say to him.

“Oh, you didn’t know?” He puts the pencil between his teeth and talks to me through it. “Supernatural spiderling…totally cooler than anything you can do.”

“All of the blood is going to rush to your head if you stay that way.”

He takes the pencil out of his mouth so he can stick his tongue out at me. I float a piece of notebook paper through the air and make it slap him gently across the face.

“Pff, like that’s cool or whatever.” He blows me a kiss, and in his smile, I recognize the funny kid I used to know.

Other days, he goes to the gym with Winston after school because he’s trying to swim again, or he and Winston play basketball (Winston pokes endless fun at how bad he is, even though they’re equally terrible, according to Finn). Sometimes, I grab coffee with Daphne, and I’ll work on my story or read while she creates websites or designs little web games, you know, for fun.

“You’re going to make a kickass living one day,” I say one afternoon on the way home. “Like seriously, if you can figure out a way to design something more addicting than Angry Birds or Candy Crush…”

“That’s the dream,” she says, hand dangling out the window, riding the wind. “Figuring out something more lucrative than making little green pigs explode. However will I do it?”

And then there are the things Finn and I can only do because of what I can do. Somehow, showing him this wild power that I have makes it brighter and lighter. So we drive out to this place behind one of those abandoned developments near Ellis Lake, right at the end of the actual creek of Wicker Creek, and I show him my world.

It’s quiet, just the two of us and some water bugs and the birds that live in the trees overhead. The light comes in through the leaves, casting golden shadows that make the water shimmer.
