Chapter 31

Quinton drove his SUV into the Barracks Road Shopping Center and searched for a parking space near the Barnes and Noble Bookstore. If UVA was in session, the lot would be overflowing, but since it was summer break, there were plenty of available spaces. He spotted Stephanie’s vintage 1965 Triumph Spitfire convertible and pulled in next to it. The car cost $2,200 new, but now that it was a classic, it was worth a lot more. QT knew it was invaluable to Stephanie. She’d inherited it from her father when he’d died suddenly.

He entered the building and veered right into the Barnes & Noble Café. When they’d been together, this was their hangout spot. It had free Wi-Fi, good beverages, and a variety of cheesecakes, which had way too many calories, but tasted great.

The café is where they’d initially met. QT had been sitting at a table when he’d noticed the sexy brunette who had seated herself at the table next to him. She was carrying a weapon that wasn’t completely concealed. He’d said to her, “Do you have a set of handcuffs to go with that gun?”

“Yes, I do. But I like my men to have their hands free and ready for action. You don’t look like a man who’d like to be cuffed by a woman.”

“I like women who know what they want and aren’t shy about going after it. But you’re right, I like to be in control. By the way, I’m Quinton Target, at your service.”

“Nice to meet you Quinton. I’m Stephanie Winters and I’ll let you know when I feel like being serviced.”

It hadn’t been a case of love at first sight for either of them. Lust at first sight better described it. Unfortunately, although the sex was great, they’d never moved beyond it to make a real personal connection. Their personalities clashed. QT was a neat freak; Stephanie was a slob. She was a fly-by-the-seat-of-the-pants type of person while he was methodical and analytical until the time was right to act.

QT’s biggest complaint about her was that if she felt she’d been wronged she couldn’t get beyond it. She would endlessly rehash any perceived betrayal and look for ways to get even. He was prone to writing off disloyal people and moving on with his life. Stephanie’s biggest complaint about him was that he avoided talking about his feelings and personal issues.

Although it had been almost two years since he’d last seen her, when he saw her sitting at the café table, wearing a silk blouse that snugged her breasts tightly and provocatively, he remembered what had attracted him to her when they’d first met. When she opened her mouth and spoke, he remembered why their relationship had failed.

“You’re ten minutes late,” she said. “Don’t tell my why, let me guess. You were being amorous with your blonde, bimbo girlfriend, right? I always knew you had a thing for her when we were dating.”

“Her name is Blaire and she’s not a bimbo. She’s an intelligent and classy woman.
