“It’s gone,” Amelia whispered. She walked along Carmichael’s main street, viewing the destruction. The garden Dot and Sharon had worked tirelessly to create was torn up, the soil spread around the park.

“It’s not salvageable,” Dot said. “We’ll have to restart.”

“Don’t bother now. If we’re about to get snow, let’s wait it out.” Dozens of residents wandered aimlessly, examining the devastation the tornadoes had unleashed on their homes.

Dot glanced toward her diner. “All this destruction, and the storm spared my diner.”

The burned factory down the street was in shambles, ripped to shreds. Isla’s flower shop remained standing too, but most of the other buildings had been devastated.

Her deputies were on the road, scouring every square mile of Carmichael in case someone needed help. Their only saving grace was that ninety percent of their population slept at the storage facility at the edge of town.

She’d never examined Isla’s shop, and she left Dot when Sharon arrived, holding a checklist of things they needed to do.

Amelia tried the front, which was locked, and moved to the alley, seeking the delivery door. The handle turned, and she pulled it open. The back of Isla’s store had three fridges, with clear glass showcasing her flowers. They were bundled in groups of similar colors. An unfinished bouquet sat on her workbench, the petals wilted. In the salesroom, everything had died, and the fragrant floral scent had a hint of decay to it.

“What was your plan?” she asked Isla, wishing the woman had survived the horror she’d endured. Isla had spent a decade getting Carmichael to Shift. She’d assembled a collection of weapons, bringing soldiers…and then was killed before she could travel to find Logan, her co-founder.

Isla had been so kind to her that first night at poker. It didn’t make sense that she could be behind the transportation of this many people. Every death they’d experienced was on her, but that didn’t matter, because Isla was dead too.

Amelia sat on a chair and lowered her head. She was so tired.

Yesterday, she’d been hopeful they could keep it together for a couple of weeks until Logan showed up. Now she wasn’t so certain. If Caesar’s pal Harrison was on the job, were they trying to move Carmichael home? Why hadn’t anything happened yet?

Amelia stayed put for a few minutes, her mind reeling with unanswered questions.

She thought about Dot’s house and the locked basement, and wondered why it bothered her so much. Amelia stood to view the red-haired woman across the street.

“Chief, can you come to the sanctuary? Over.” Haley was only supposed to contact her in case of an emergency.

“I’ll be right there,” she said. Amelia unlocked the place and went out to the sidewalk where her squad car was parked. Luckily, the toppled tree beside it at Mrs. Lemar’s had just taken off the passenger mirror. With the broken rear window, her ride was in rough shape.

Pastor Odell was outside the fence surrounding their home base, holding a Bible and speaking with Candice Dawson, Summer’s mom.

“Good afternoon,” Amelia said.
