Chapter 13

The year was 1865. Simon and Sarah had been slaves their whole life. They were born into slavery. Their Master put them together as a couple when they were young. Their Master allowed them to have three children. He was using them and other couples as a way to have babies, creating cheap slaves; slaves he didn’t have to buy.

When the children were little, and Sarah couldn’t have any more babies. He sold their children to another plantation. He begged his Master not to sell their children, and when that didn’t work. He went crazy and went after his Master. His Master’s men stopped him. Then they beat him severely. When he healed from his beating. He went after his Master again. Then they beat him again, nearly killing him. When he healed from his wounds. They beat Sarah, as he lay on the ground crying.

While he was on the ground crying. His Master walked over to him and said, “Boy, if you cause any more trouble. I’ll kill your woman.”

How long ago was that? He didn’t know? He was a young man then. Now he was old. Were his children still alive? Would they remember their mother and father?

After that day, so many years ago. He and Sarah waited for the opportunity to escape. The years slowly went by, but they never gave up on their dream to be free. Then, as if by a miracle the war broke out. The Civil War. A nation divided, men killing each other, brother against brother, father against son. The country was in chaos.

The war was still early when he and Sarah ran away. They were in the deep south and they didn’t know how far away freedom was. If they knew that rainy, stormy night when they made their escape that it would take them months to reach the north. They might have changed their minds.

As they travelled through the south, mostly at night and hiding during the day. They saw men fighting and killing each other. The Union Army invaded the south and was met by the Confederate Army. From a distance they saw men shooting each other, running a bayonet through each other’s body, and cannon balls taking men’s legs, arms and heads off.

They heard men cursing, yelling and other men crying as they met their Maker. The smells were the worse. They came across dead men in fields, woods, creeks and streams. Their bloated bodies were about ready to explode as their lifeless eyes stared into space. Birds, dogs and wild animals feasted on the dead and maggots crawled out of the dead’s eye sockets. Smoke rose in the air as houses, fields and towns were set on fire. Some of the smoke was thick and heavy. The smell of the dead and smoke stuck to their clothes and in their pores for weeks. Even today, he thought he could smell the dead on him. It was hell on earth.

When he and Sarah found an old boat. They used it and crossed into Ohio, but the slave catchers were close on their trail.
