MYSQL was an open source database corporation which at one time had over 10 million followers. At that time the market leader Oracle simply was not able to move in the same evolutionary speed. There is not much defence against such quick movers as open source solutions, so Oracle implemented the classical American defence move and bought MYSQL. It cost it billions of dollars, because first Oracle tried to buy MYSQL directly, but when that didn’t succeed Oracle bought Sun,14 which recently had bought MYSQL. Catching up with fast movers is costly and it can also lead to cannibalization of the sector. The future will tell if Oracle can manage to get 10 million people to follow it – they are not for sale.
