Chapter Twelve

Simon gave up trying to get to the boat and turned back. He expected to see that one of the remaining tourists had fallen into the water or something and immediately become prey to one of the sharks. What he hadn’t expected to see was Cory grappling with the two girls and trying to drag them to the water as though he intended to throw them in.

If Katherine had been larger, she might have been able to fight off Cory and his much more significant weight. Unfortunately, she was unable to get any leverage as the much larger man grabbed her from behind and locked his arms around her. Simon, unable to do anything but paddle more frantically in his attempt to get back, was forced to watch the melee play out. The way Cory held her, she was completely able to move her arms, making it easy for him to twist and toss her into the water’s edge. Miriam screamed, but she didn’t move. She seemed caught between wanting to run and help her friend and knowing she had to stay as far away from Cory as possible.

So both Simon and Miriam watched helplessly as the dorsal fins circling the shrinking island immediately turned and made a bee-line for the place where Katherine was wading waist-deep in the river. Katherine, for her part, seemed to realize this was absolutely not the place where she wanted to be, but she was still too dazed by Cory’s unexpected attack to make an immediate move back to the limited safety of land. She floundered in the water like she was unsure which direction to swim, either to the relative safety of the land or away from the crazy asshole that had thrown her off of it, and that hesitation cost her. Several circling bull shark fins dove below the surface, followed moments later by a sharp tug on Katherine that temporarily pulled her under the water. She splashed wildly and managed to pull away, but as she got to water shallow enough where she could walk on the bottom, she was noticeably limping. The sharks had managed to do some damage to her, and it was slowing her down. Another dorsal fin popped up thirty feet behind and to her left, then zipped at her with a speed Simon hadn’t actually realized was possible in a shark in such shallow water. Katherine screamed as the shark clipped her with its flippers and knocked her over, causing her to mostly go under again.

As this was happening, Cory had made a move to grab Miriam and do the same to her, but Miriam was stronger and more wiry than she looked. She slipped between his arms, dropped low to the ground, and then twisted into exactly the right position to land a sucker punch square in the middle of Cory’s crotch. He screeched and almost dropped to his knees, but kept his balance at the last moment and instead staggered away from Miriam.
