Chapter Seven

Jamie watched six hired hands move in a synchronized swarm as they placed bouquets on five, large, round banquet tables covered in lavender tablecloths. Long strands of white LED lights, strung overhead from temporary poles, provided the perfect amount of romantic ambient light.

Three rows of chairs, placed far enough apart for two people to walk between them, sat five chairs deep. And two wedding photographers were already capturing the many memories that would soon grace albums and social media.

Jamie went to stand by Kali and Victoria.

“Shit.” Kali raked her fingers through her hair as she glanced at her phone. “Vic?”

“What is it?” Jamie asked.

“Hold that thought,” Victoria said as she called out to a fifty-something woman with a hard-shell guitar case strapped to her back. “Set your mic and equipment up over there.” She pointed to an empty white folding chair that sat to the left of an eight-foot wedding arch graced with a variety of beautiful white flowers woven into the structure. “Okay.” Victoria turned back to Kali. “What’s up?”

“Annie’s running about twenty minutes behind. Her van had a flat tire, so she’s just now heading out.”

“Shit,” Victoria repeated as she closed her eyes and rubbed her temples. “Okay…that’s okay, um, we’ll just have Tammy stretch the ceremony a bit. Could you go make sure Linda has everything she needs?”

“Linda is the…” Jamie said as Kali moved off.

“Musician.”

“Ah, yes. Got it. I’ll go tell Tammy.” Jamie hopped up the porch steps and flung open the screen door.

People moved in and out of multiple room dividers erected in haphazard patterns, creating a private dressing room and staging area. A twenty-something makeup artist with pink-streaked hair fluttered in and out of the dividers, tending to the anxious brides and a handful of bridesmaids. Jamie scanned the room until she spotted Tammy on the corner of the couch, which had been pushed flush against the far wall along with the coffee table and TV stand.

“Tammy,” Jamie said as she maneuvered through the sea of people and plopped next to her. “The caterer’s running about twenty minutes behind. Can you stretch the ceremony speech a bit?”

Tammy took a moment to finish chewing on a piece of cheese before confidently nodding. “Sure, I can do that.”

“Great.” Jamie got up again and pushed through the new screen door and took a moment to appreciate its silence. Although the old one had character, the new one, according to the salesman at the home construction warehouse, had an automatic hydraulic close feature that promised to be as quiet as a whisper and a metal screen that kept out both bugs and burglars.

She checked the countdown clock on her phone for the umpteenth time. The wedding would begin in exactly one hour, three minutes, and forty-two seconds. Right at sunset as the brides requested. If all went as planned, the vows would be spoken as nature painted the sky with a palette of reds, oranges, and yellows. And by the time the guests finished their dinner, their backdrop would be a beautiful full moon.
