When she walked through the little gate, she saw the cluster of sheep grazing over the uneven ground between the jutting rocks and the empty barn. Kalixâs silence troubled her the rest of the way back to her cottage. Stopping many times, she glanced back, counted, and sighed.
Sheâd taken Campbellâs ram and at least a dozen of his older skinny ewes. And that wasnât what bothered her most â the old ones, the skinny ones, and no doubt a few who were sick. Her hand missed the knob of the front door.
Kalix ruffled the collieâs fur, he spoke to the dog, his voice so low she couldnât hear what he said. Then he rose, pointed back where theyâd come, and Tartan raced off.
âWeâll put them in the barn before nightfall, leave the sick ones out.â Isnât that what Campbell had done?
Were all his flock that way? It made better sense to her on the morn for Graham to have snatched them away to seek her hand. Romantic, as a romantic heart she had deep down, but the truth of it stuck in the back of her throat like a wedge of insult.
Graham Campbell hadnât wanted her at all.
Kalix followed her into the house, into the kitchen where she lit the stove. She found her kettle and pumped it with water from the sink. âTea?â
He shook his head and stared at her â a foul mood sheâd put him in. His eyes dark, almost black, he stared at the kettle and the stove. Those long strands of hair hung against his cheek, and she couldnât stand it.
Too close to keep her hand to herself, she reached over and smoothed the strand back behind his ear. He tensed, but too late. Sheâd done it and would do it again. His hair, like silk she imagined, and the feather touch of her fingers against his cheek sent a brush of heat in her heart below the stone.
His eyes lifted; they stared at the stone. âHow do I know youâre not lying?â She blurted her thought aloud.
âWeâve come back to this again.â His brows lowered.
âYou promised to help me find my flock.â She turned to fiddle with the kettle before it blew. âYou whisked us away from the village and to the fields of Campbell, but you know where the other part of me flock is and how I am to believe you it is as you say?â
His hand came down on hers over the handle of the kettle, startling her. She hadnât seen or heard him move. A bit of hot water came up to splash her hand, and she hissed.
âWhy is it you humans always put more value on your holdings than on yourself?â He didnât give her a chance to answer. âAccept the fortune of what you have, sweet Tara. You cannot expect to tangle with the Cu Sith and not pay the price. I canât protect you from them if you insist on chasing your death.â
Another piece of hair slid down over the side of his face.
