Chapter Fifteen

“I can’t believe the amount of food sitting out here.”

Brandon picked up a piece of corn on the cob and added it to his already groaning plate. The Fourth of July fest was in full swing. People were milling around the main lodge—more bodies than the resort could support as guests. Tyler had brought in a live band, and Brandon found himself tapping his toes to the rocking country beat.

“Just where are you going to put all that food?”

He turned at the sound of a woman’s voice. She didn’t look familiar.

“You must be Brandon. I recognized you from Tyler’s description. I’m Kirsten Connolly, resort manager.”

Brandon shuffled his plate so he could shake her hand. “Tyler told me about you. Congratulations on the baby.”

Kirsten’s smile was radiant. Brandon saw that she had a plate full of food herself. “Can I help you carry anything?”

“Are you implying that I have so much food on my plate I can’t carry it all by myself?”

Brandon thought she was serious for a second or two until he caught the glint in her eye. “No, ma’am. My mother taught me to never mention a woman’s age, weight or eating habits. However, she did stress that I am to always provide assistance should I encounter one who is…” Brandon looked around then leaned in to whisper conspiratorially, “In a delicate condition.”

Kirsten giggled and slapped him on the shoulder. “She sounds like a smart woman who raised her boy right.”

Brandon nodded. “Not everything she tried to teach me stuck, but she did the best she could with the limited mental capacity of a boy when it comes to manners.”

They moved through the line and Brandon scouted for a place to sit. The pasture had several picnic tables spaced out, but many people were sitting on blankets provided by the lodge.

“Where’s Tyler?” Kirsten asked.

Brandon nodded toward the bandstand where a group of adults were gathered. “He’s playing host. I imagine he’ll find me eventually.”

“Well come on, you can sit with my husband and me.”

He followed Kirsten to the far side of the grassy area that had been designated for the party. Brandon saw a man sitting at a picnic table by himself, but the second he spotted Kirsten his face lit up and he quickly stood to greet her and took her plate so she could sit down. It was sweet.

“I found this guy trying to sneak all the fruit salad onto his plate. He was even selectively picking the strawberries. Thought I’d bring him over so we could keep an eye on him.”

“Hmm, yes. Clearly he’s a menace to society and must be monitored for the safety of the general public, or at least pregnant women of the world.” He leaned forward and said softly, “She’s very attached to fruit at the moment.”

“Well that’s a good thing for me, because I’m about as fruity as you can get,” Brandon said before he took a bite of grilled chicken.

Kirsten and Dan stared at him for a few seconds then they all broke out in laughter that had guests at other nearby tables looking at them.
