This lithograph shows the Chesapeake attacking a British vessel near Quebec during the War of 1812 (Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division, Detroit Publishing Co., ca. 1890–1901).

This wood engraving by Howard Pyle, which originally appeared in the April 1884 issue of Harper’s Monthly, shows the impressment of Americans (Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division).

By the time the Alligator reached London, the outbreak had run its course. Captain Africk brought his newly pressed men onto the quarterdeck and offered them a choice. They could sign up as regular enlisted men, or he would send them to Spithead in Britain, from which they would sail to parts unknown to prevent them from writing to the American consulate. Penny refused, so Africk had him transferred to the sixty-four-gun Stately, a vessel belonging to a squadron bound for the Cape of Good Hope.67
