CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Brianna—

Shane holds the door to the clubhouse for me. There are only a handful of people inside. The initial room is two stories, with windows up high. There’s a bar on the right and tables and pool on the left. I glance to my immediate left and see a raised platform in the corner with a stripper pole. It’s not being used, thank God. About halfway back on the left is a set of stairs that lead to a second level above that rests over the back of this room and looks like it goes back the length of the building.

Shane sees where I’m looking. “Come on, I’ll show you what’s up there.” He leads me to the foot of the stairs and just to the right, I see a room.

“What’s in there?” I point as he pulls me up.

“Church.”

“Church?”

“It’s a conference room where we have our club meetings.”

“Can I see?”

“Umm. ‘Fraid not. Members only. Unless one of the officers invites you in to talk to you.”

“Oh.”

We head up the stairs and turn down the hall. I see doors with old fashioned frosted glass in the top half. They still have the lettering on them saying what offices they once were. “Are these the original offices for this place?”

“Yeah. Cool, huh? This place was abandoned when the club bought it decades ago and converted the offices to rooms.”

We walk down the hall, and he stops in front of one that reads Quality Control. “This one’s mine.” He unlocks it and we walk inside. It’s small with just a twin bed, nightstand and a tall dresser. The bed is made, and the room is free of beer bottles and clutter. I smile at him. “Did you clean for me?”

He grins. “Guilty.”

The walls are brick, but some light comes from the dingy paned window.

“Do you stay here often?”

“No, it’s basically a place to sleep off a drunken night.”

“And how often is that?”

“Not often. I also use it to take a nap if we’ve had a long ride.”

“What kind of long rides?”

“Sometimes we ride up to the Oregon border. Sometimes Reno. Sometimes Sturgis. Depends what we’re doing.”

“I see.”

He grins, taking my waist in his hands. “No, you don’t. But that’s okay. You don’t have to understand it all at once.”

“Shane, I feel like all you’ve done is show me the shiny side of the coin. But I need to know, do you do illegal things?”

“Brianna, I don’t want to lie to you. Yeah, some stuff we do is outside the law.”

“Do you kill people?”

“You mean the club?” He grins again. “Only if they deserve it.”

“It’s not a joke.” My tone is serious as I search his eyes. “Have you killed someone?”

He sobers. “Yeah, I’ve killed people. But they were all while I was in the military, following orders and doing what I was sent to do.”

“The military. Right.”

“You’re not a fan?”

“After what happened, should I be?”

“It’s not the military’s fault your husband OD’d, Brianna.”

“Isn’t it? What he must have been through…” And then my eyes focus on Shane.
