Chapter 28

Ronnie had finished her breakfast and was at the tail end of a set of pushups when Eduardo wheeled in a cart with a big screen TV.

“Good morning again Ronnicita,” he said with a smile. He positioned the cart next to the outlet on the wall opposite the door.

“98...oomph...hey Ed...99...oomph...100.”

Pushups done, Ronnie sat on the floor and wiped her face with the towel wrapped behind her neck. She smiled up at her swarthy friend and asked, “Whatcha got there?”

“This Ronnicita is the next step in your training.”

Curiosity eating at her, Ronnie began to stand, but Eduardo held out his hand.

“Stay there little one. It is better to show than tell.” Eduardo turned on the TV and pressed play on the DVD player resting on the shelf below.

As the screen came alive, Ronnie could see the DVD title, “Kickboxing for Boxers”.

“Kickboxing?” Ronnie asked, excitement rising. She’d heard a lot about the sport, but Gus had never offered any training for it at his gym.

“Yes, your boxing skills are good, but they use only half your body.” Eduardo struck a boxing stance and continued.

“While footwork is a defense in boxing,” he said, moving forward and back with practiced ease, “it offers very little in the way of offense.”

The lithe orderly snapped his foot forward, holding it at its most extended point “Kickboxing changes that by adding moves that can be more powerful than your punches.” He lowered his foot and continued. “After I retired from the ring, I was, how do you say, bored and started to learn this. It’s very satisfying and makes you stronger.”

“Can I try it?” Ronnie asked. She was literally shaking with the desire to be moving.

Kickboxing looks fun!

“Wait there a moment Ronnicita. Let me show you more of what it looks like and then I will leave you with the DVD to learn on your own.”

With that, Eduardo sprang into action. He jabbed with his fists and moved at a fast pace in a circle around an imaginary opponent, alternating his punches with different kicks. Front, side, roundhouse, and even back, his kicks exploded with force. As his strong leg muscles bunched and released beneath his tight, light gray sweats, Ronnie could see the reason why kicks could be much stronger than punches.

After a few moments of furious action, Eduardo stopped and panted then turned to face her.

Ronnie burst into applause. “Ed, that was fantastic! Can you show me more?”

Shaking his head, Eduardo answered, “Not today Ronnicita. There is much to do to get ready for the tests that Doctor MacGovern is creating. That is why I brought you the DVD.”

Ronnie stood, stalked over to Eduardo and gave him a brief but tight hug.

Face burning she said, “Thanks Ed.”

“You are most welcome Ronnicita,” he replied before leaving the room.

By the time dinner rolled around, Ronnie was beat. She’d lost count of the number of times she’d watched the DVD through, pausing often to practice each move before moving on.

As she lay on her bed panting, Ronnie couldn’t wait to show Eduardo how much she’d already learned.
