IRINESTA WAS ON THE balcony when E’Nith returned. She had come as quickly as she could, yet she did not want the guard to think she had reason to hurry. Many people still tried to speak with her, to send Irinesta notes and messages, and she did not want the soldiers to think Mareesha was anyone special. She had been shocked when she’d seen her in the Faunist House, and had looked away, pretending not to notice her.

She placed the basket that had just been searched on the table and went out to onto the balcony. Irinesta was looking down at the city, her hands clutched tightly. When she turned to look at the old woman, there were tears in her eyes. Her face crumpled, and E’Nith knew at once what had happened.

“You saw her?” E’Nith said, her stubby tongue stumbling over the words.

Irinesta clutched the old woman and hugged her tightly. The tears fell, yet she was smiling.

“Yes, E’Nith, I saw her,” said Irinesta. “I saw her, and her children.”
