Tavarian, Darby, and Dexius set foot into the swampy forest the next morning. Tavarian took point, clearing out thick weeds and thorny vines with his sword. The old trees twisted and turned in all directions, some even grew into each other. Black, dark red, and green leaves grew thick on the bushes and trees, long and angular. They came to a green, mossy field. The tall stalks of weeds spread out, making it easy to pass through. Tavarian relaxed, sheathing his sword.

After a few steps over the moss, he plunged down.

Large plants and crossing vines tangled his legs in the water he’d fallen into. Weeds and moss covered the path back to the surface, swallowing him. Panicking, Tavarian flung his arms wildly, struggling to get his head above the thick soup. A hand grabbed him, pulling until the tangled growth began to give way and break. Dexius dragged him onto the muddy ground. Tavarian coughed, taking deep breaths.

“You saved me.” Tavarian’s soaked hair fell dripping over his widened eyes.

Dexius shrugged. “I guess that makes me your hero.”

Tavarian pouted at the remark as he got to his feet. Squeezing the water out of his clothing, he surveyed the mossy substance floating on the water’s surface. It was algae, covering the water so thickly that it appeared as solid ground.

“What was that about?” Dexius quipped. “Are you that thirsty?”

“I didn’t realize it was water.”

Dexius laughed. “I didn’t either. I’m glad you found out before I did.”

“Maybe you should take the lead the rest of the way!” Tavarian bellowed, embarrassed at his mistake.

“You going to let me have that sword?”

“No, you could have bought a sword instead of a useless bow.”

“Useless? This bow has already paid off. It’s fed us and scared away those robbers.”

“It was this sword more than your bow that intimidated them.”

“I doubt they were afraid of engaging you in a fight, but they didn’t have a chance to get close enough with me and this bow.”

Darby began tugging at the back of Dexius’s shirt.

“We better get moving if we’re going to find those stones and get out of this place before nightfall,” Dexius said.

Tavarian turned and rambled through the clearing, testing any mossy ground with his sword. Water covered the entire area, forcing them now to wade through it. They kept to the shallows, stepping on roots twisting beneath the water. Tavarian hit a deep spot, and scrambled to find a place to stand up in.

Dexius shifted his quiver so that it rested on his chest and kneeled to allow Darby to climb on his back because her legs were too short to step over some of the deep pools. The marsh deepened as Tavarian moved farther, raising the water level to nearly up to his knees. The tall reeds sticking out of the water deceived him, making it look shallower than it was.

Stepping onto the next set of reeds made him sink more than knee-deep into the marsh. Tavarian faltered. “Maybe we should go back and find a way around this.
