They left the river behind them for it turned now southeastward and their path lay still to the southwest. Over the next four days they saw the forest gradually thin out, the pines gave way to other species, young beech and hazel splashed the forest with silver-glowing green. Bluebells shot up through the fertile earth and the squawk of crows was loud in their ears. Beams of light danced across the ground in a patchwork of leaf blown shadows. Not far beyond, the forest came at last to an end.

The moment that open air was in sight Viridian sprang forward, opening his wings as he ran. He ascended the grassy hill and on reaching the summit rose up into the air, climbing ever higher until he seemed to touch the clouds. Folding his wings he fell spinning almost to the ground before spreading his leathery wings wide again and soaring out of sight. Little-Samwi, who had continued with them though the other Gwembolins were now left far behind, watched disdainfully from behind Artheiwyn’s boots.

“Coming?” Artheiwyn asked the cat.

It flicked its tail and lifted one forepaw daintily to wash it.

“I can breathe again!” Amaroe exclaimed, taking in a deep breath and stretching out his arms. “I never thought that I would tire of a forest!”

“What month is it now?” Taithe asked.

“It must be the eighth day of the month of Tairan,” Drenn guessed, brushing aside strands of his red-gold hair that the wind was using to tickle his cheek.

“The seventh,” Laistar corrected him. “It was the spring festival two days before we crossed the river.”

“And I the Rialoa did not even make a toast to Spring!” Drenn cried. “We must make amends tonight. Is there any mead left?” He asked hopefully.

“Not a drop,” Yathanion told him.

“Never mind, water will have to suffice,” Drenn watched as Viridian passed over the hill. “Perhaps we should be a little more cautious still than we are being.”

Elenion nodded. “Let us see what is over that hill and call the dragons back.”

Looking southward they saw that the land was similar to that on the northern side of the forest, though possibly flatter. Tall pillars of rock thrust upward out of the ground like scattered teeth, seeming somehow alien as though some huge giant had dropped them out of the sky.

“If I am right,” Drenn said. “These were once the plains of Noomara where the first Eluen horses ran free, untouched by elf, faun, Myrdain or man.”

“It will rain tonight,” Amaroe said, looking up at the sky.
