Chapter 29

Latelhaurie Homestead, Northern Ontario

Katia woke early, brewed a pot of coffee and let the dogs out while she waited for the java to finish. Nesti and Moroz were back at the door a minute later, the pups romped in the thin dusting of snow on the lawn. Katia had woken at 3am to a house cooling fast, she had banked the fire in the main fireplace before she had gone to bed but that had been at 8:30pm. A very early night for her but she felt the need to give Tony and Tracy time alone, apparently neither of them thought to restock the firebox before they retired. When she had walked out of her room into the living room the cold blast had chilled her to the bone. The fireplace in her room was still lit but needed stoked, which was why she had thought to check the main fireplace. By the time she had prepped the fire, lit it and gotten it how she wanted it almost an hour had passed.

At six o’clock the dogs were at her bedside waiting to be let outside. She had gotten up, pulled on her extra thick robe, slipped into a pair of rabbit fur slippers and trudged out to start her day. This early in the spring she had all her plants in the greenhouse, she wouldn’t be able to plant anything in the ground for over a month. This far north they experienced heavy frosts well into May. Still there was a lot of work to do, between the greenhouse, cleanup around the property from the winter and fixing tools. She had to sharpen her shovels, shears and other blades; check her trees for damage, disease or insects and tend to her flock of chickens.

She filled her mug with freshly brewed coffee, pulled a pound of bacon from the fridge and began making breakfast. The aroma of bacon in the skillet brought her guests out of their room before the eggs even hit the pan.

“Morning,” Tony greeted her with a genuine smile. He was fully dressed and moved to pull on his boots to make a circuit of the perimeter. Nesti sat beside him, waiting for the human to tie his boots. No doubt impatient because his feet didn’t require covers before going outside. Tony helped himself to coffee, pouring a large amount into an insulated travel mug, before he opened the door and went for his patrol, Nesti leading the way.

Tracy emerged a moment later, her hair a tangle reminiscent of the briar patch from Peter Rabbit. “Morning,” she almost moaned.

“Do you two not like the word good?” Katia asked.

“Don’t like to assume,” Tracy drawled.

“Huh?”

“If I say good morning, that assumes that it is a good morning. Maybe it’s a shitty morning, or maybe it’s an I don’t give a fuck morning,” she replied. “I don’t want to assume you are having a good morning, because as the saying goes, ‘never assume, because to assume makes an ass of you and me.
