Chapter Eighteen

Olivia greeted Rachel when she came home in the early evening.

“How was your day?”

“Good, Ms. Rachel.”

“Where’s Claire?”

“She’s in her bedroom, showering.”

Rachel sat at the kitchen bar, reading her mail. Michael called.

“Rachel, will this new program you’re working on for the government affect how we do business here in the United States?”

“No, it will only affect how the government monitors itself.”

“Will it go on the open market?”

“No, the government bought the program exclusively and it won’t be sold to any other entity, that’s why they’re going to pay so much for it, but part of the deal is that I can modify it and use it myself for our business, but not anywhere else.”

“When will the paperwork come through to my office?”

“Probably not until the end of this month, but you should be getting their statement of intent within the next three days. Michael, this is very confidential—Claire doesn’t even know about it yet. I’m not taking cash. I’m taking a land deal instead.”

“Did they offer you cash?”

“Yes, but I want the land. I have enough money to last a lifetime. The land is more important to me, and I made them an offer they couldn’t refuse and pushed with some help from friends in high places. Meanwhile, I’m glad you called. Claire and I are going out of town for an extended vacation, off the grid. You can get a message through the tribal council like before if you need me, or if it is an extreme emergency, Jack can helicopter in, but otherwise, I’ll call you in about two weeks.”

They discussed a few more financial matters and then ended the call.

Rachel’s next calls were to her tribal leader on the reservation and to her cousin Joseph to discuss getting the help she would need from her extended family.

The last call was to the stables to have horses and all of their tack transported to their destination.

Claire came up behind her and kissed the back of her hair and then moved in front of her and kissed her face and lips.

Rachel put her arms around her. “You all right?”

“I’ve missed you so much.”

“I’ve missed you too. I’ll explain what you need for our trip later, but for now, I want you to relax, rest, and be with me. Would you like to go for a swim?”

Claire kissed her cheek. “No, baby, I just took a shower, but I’ll come out and watch you.”

Rachel spoke to Olivia about dinner plans and asked her to make a fire in the fireplace, and then gave her the rest of the week off. “You can put our security guards on hold until we get back.”

After her swim, Rachel set out the food in the living room. Claire helped bring pillows and blankets and placed them in front of the fireplace.

Claire sat quietly as they ate, leaning against the pillows, looking around the room. “We really do have a beautiful home, don’t you think?”

“Yes, we do, but it’s only beautiful because you’re here in it.
