Meeting with the Colonel

“Cordeaux, we’re proud of you, son. The other men are grateful for their lives, too,” Colonel Jamison told him.

He invited Grady to take a seat. Grady was uncomfortable being informal with a high-ranking officer, so he responded to the colonel with, “Yes, Sir.”

“Not many men get the Service Cross. You probably could’ve got the Medal of Honor if it had been a major engagement. I don’t make those decisions, son. I guess politics reach all the way back here to the Nam, but we are damn proud of you.”

Jamison paused for a moment and said, “Let me get to the point! The 9th is going to be shipping out in a month. The politicians want to reduce the U.S. presence in this god-forsaken place, so the 9th is going back to Kansas. The men who still have time left on their tours will be reassigned to other units in country, or in the European theater.”

“Cordeaux, you almost earned a free ride home and an Honorable Discharge because of your injuries, but the doctors said you were still combat-qualified. However, because of your heroic actions under fire, I will do whatever I can to see that your last six months in Vietnam will not be on the business end of an AK-47. We need men like you in the rice paddies, but you’ve earned your keep.”

Jamison continued, “So, think about it, ask around, see the detailer, and let me know in a week where you might want to go or what you want to do. Do you understand me, son?”

“Yes, Sir!” Grady replied. He stood up and saluted the colonel.

Jamison returned the salute. “Dismissed.”
