A couple of days had passed since Jesslow’s visit. His appearance initially unsettled them, but as more time passed and they read online that the supermarket had reopened, their fears subsided. They had nothing to worry about.

Isaac and Malak were due to return to school the following week, whereas Zeth would have to remain at home. Ava and Devron had come to an agreement with Mr Little that he would be given the resources to study at home and would be able to return to school the following May to take his final exams. No other school would accept him at this point in the year and he needed to sit his exams. Not that Zeth cared – he had already been given a pile of work and reading to do, but all it did was collect dust in his room. His parents were currently looking for a tutor and had already interviewed three people, but Zeth’s attitude and ability to make people feel uncomfortable meant they had all politely declined the position.

Meanwhile, Malak was at ease, too. The possibility of demon attacks wasn’t at the forefront of his mind and he was able to rest peacefully knowing that the house was protected. But the days off did have their drawbacks. The boys were bored most of the time, and even though Malak kept himself occupied by reading books and helping round the house, Isaac and Zeth didn’t bother. The constant contact was starting to cause even more friction between them. Over the last few days, they had fought constantly, with screaming matches and full-on fistfights. They couldn’t stand the sight of each other.

Isaac left the house early, as he wanted to get some running in before breakfast. Even though he had been excluded, he still wanted to keep up his stamina and hopefully join the athletics team when he returned to school. He ran quickly through the streets and stopped for a break after fifteen minutes. He sat on the nearest wall and breathed out with satisfaction – he’d needed that.

‘Hey, Isaac, is that you?’ someone bellowed from up the road.

Isaac turned his head and his heart quickly filled with excitement; walking towards him were Jamie and his four friends. Isaac only saw them now and again, but he was always glad when he did. They were older, always dressed in the nicest clothes, smoked weed and did what they wanted. Isaac reckoned they were really cool. His parents had told him to stay away from them, because they were a ‘gang’ and therefore trouble. But Isaac doubted this – they were just a group of friends who liked to chill out.

‘Jamie, you all right, bro?’ Isaac said, standing up as Jamie and his friends approached. Jamie was six foot and wore a thin, golden chain around his neck. He was dressed head to toe in designer labels and his eyes were so red it looked like he hadn’t been to bed. ‘I’m good, I’m good,’ he replied. ‘What you doing out here?’

‘Just been for a run,’ Isaac replied.
