I was pleased but wasn’t sure what Red would do with the souls at San Carlos. “Do you think she’ll be able to connect with their ancestors? That would be the best possible option, but I’m unsure if it’s feasible.”

Maggie shrugged. “I don’t know. I could go see what’s happening, but I’m not sure if I could even find them. We’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, we have a nasty ghost that’s quite upset with you. We need to deal with him before we move on to anything else.”

I agreed. “Audrey let’s get the last of these things organized and start working on the smudging. Then perhaps we can work on a plan to get rid of Nathan completely, or at least find out if we can make safe contact and what we can do to help him. I don’t know if that’s even a possibility.”

Audrey looked at Maggie and I watched their eyes meet. I knew they thought I was crazy, but what else was new. We got everything put away except for the items we’d need for the smudging of the entire home from top to bottom.

Maggie was wandering around in the kitchen when I walked in to get another cup of coffee. “What are you looking for?”

She seemed startled. “I’m trying to see how they would have gotten into the basement or cellar. Maybe it was from outside.” She moved toward the back and went right through the wall before I could say anything.

Audrey walked in just then. “Where did Maggie go?”

“She said she was looking for a basement or cellar entrance. Luci didn’t tell me about any lower level. But then again, she didn’t tell us about the attic either. I guess they would have needed a place to store food without refrigeration.”

Maggie poofed back in. “I found it, just off the back porch. It’s dark, but I like those kinds of places. Not much to see down there, but it seems large. You’ll need a flashlight if you plan to go down there.”

Audrey turned toward the dining room. “We’ll need some things besides a flashlight. I’ll grab them and you go upstairs for the light. I know you keep one in your bedroom. Maggie, for safety, would you please go with her?”

Maggie nodded and followed me up the front staircase. I got the flashlight and was back in the kitchen in a few moments. Audrey was taking a while to gather the stuff in the dining room.

I walked in and she wasn’t moving. “Audrey, this is no time for jokes.” Carefully, so I didn’t frighten her, I walked up behind and touched her shoulder. I had to reach out quickly to catch Audrey before her head hit the edge of the table. I tried to help her sit, but she was heavier than I guessed. She was immobilized and cold besides sitting on the floor slumped sideways.

Maggie walked in, gasped, and then poofed out quickly. I tried everything I could think of to help her, but nothing worked.
