Chapter twenty

Drake looked at the growing lineup in front of the nightclub. According to Vala's research on Evan, the place was doing extremely well. What had begun as a front for the human trafficking ring had grown into a profitable business.

Evan could shut down his side business and easily rake in millions. Javier figured the people running the trafficking ring backed the startup. They weren’t men you walked away from. Your affiliation lasted as long as your usefulness.

A red Ferrari pulled up in front of the nightclub. It was Evan’s. Drake had seen him leave and had been tempted to follow, but he wanted to stick close to Finlay. Seb was still picking up supplies he needed for his diversion. He’d join Drake at the club later as backup, and they’d refine their plan.

Evan tossed his keys to a security team member at the door and entered the nightclub. The man walked to the curb, got into the Ferrari, and drove away. Finlay had told him Evan parked the Ferrari in a parking garage nearby when he was at the club.

Drake’s cell phone buzzed in his pocket, and he pulled it out. It was Vala.

Finlay is in Evan’s office. He’s headed her way.

Drake stood and left his unfinished coffee on the table. There was too much traffic to dash across the street. He lengthened his stride and hurried to catch the light at the end of the block before it turned red.

He skirted around the crowd lined up along the sidewalk and approached the man at the door with a smile and an outstretched hand.

“You’re earlier than usual.” The man shook his hand and clapped him on the back. “We’re not open yet, but I can make an exception.”

“It was deliberate. I was hoping to speak with your boss about a business proposition.”

“Mr. Monroe was out and just got back,” the man said. “Give me a minute.”

Finlay may not have a minute, but there was nothing Drake could do short of pushing the guy aside and blowing the op.

He left Drake standing where he was and opened the door. He spoke to the man stationed in the entranceway, who nodded and then walked away.

“Wes is checking to see if Mr. Monroe is free. He’ll just be a minute.”

Drake waited patiently, counting down the seconds. If Evan had discovered Finlay in his office, Drake would need to revert to Plan B. Get Finlay the hell out of there. It was as solid as Plan A—wing it. Retrieving the cable keylogger had been a bad idea. They should have let Javier’s contacts deal with any fallout if they found Alexis’s prints on the keylogger.

The door opened, and Drake was ushered inside. Evan strode across the nightclub floor.

“Mr. Westerlake, if you’re here to ask if I can give Fiona the night off, you’re going to be disappointed,” Evan said with a wide smile and grasped Drake’s hand in a firm handshake. “Her hot coffee cocktails had the bar staff stretched thin last night. I expect the same will happen tonight.
