Amelia had said that she was coming home for spring break in April, but toward the end of March she calls to say that her coach wants her to stay and play in a tournament in Berkeley.

“That’s good, isn’t it?” I say to her when it’s my turn on the phone. “He wants you around.”

“I think it might be my last chance to show him I can play,” she says.

“You can play, Amelia,” I say. “You’re the best.”

She scoffs at that. “Not here, Bro. Not on this team.”

We talk a little longer before she disconnects. When I bring my mom’s phone down to her, she’s sitting at the kitchen table with my dad, drinking coffee, both looking sad.

“They can’t take her scholarship away, can they?” I ask. “Not if her grades are good?”

Mom opens her hands. “Technically, no. But if they stick her at the end of the bench and never play her . . .” Mom’s voice trails off.

Dad jumps in. “Nate, we’re thinking of flying down to visit her for a few days over spring break. All of us being there to support her, cheer her up. Sound good?”

“Sure,” I say. “No problem.”
