Dad refused to speak any more about it and when I tried to bring it up in the days that followed, he’d just shake his head or change the subject. When he clammed up, he wouldn’t budge. I finally stopped asking. However, it didn’t stop me from telling Branwyn and looking stuff up on my own.

“Why that story Bran?” I asked her after I told her my tale.

She hung her head, her brow wrinkled in deep thought. After a moment she looked up. “I don’t know, Pipe. I really don’t. But you got a creation myth from your dad and another, in a way, from the wolf girl. With the rest of my research…I know there’s something there. I still don’t have my finger on it, but it must mean something. I’m more concerned with your dad saying you’re being hunted considering what’s been going on with the green Jeep guy. Do you think they could be related?”

“I don’t know. That seems far-fetched since he didn’t show up until the gold. If we could figure out who he is and what he wants, maybe we can find out,” I said. “I just don’t know how to do that. I’m a bush pilot not an investigator. I don’t even know where to start!”

Bran smiled. “Too bad we can’t just ‘run his plate’ like they do in movies and on TV. But I’m pretty sure regular people like us don’t have that kind of pull. However, if you could draw him out of his car, I could probably sneak in and grab his registration?” She raised her eyebrows at me with the lift at the end of her sentence, like she was asking permission.

“How would you do that? I’m not even sure if he’s following me or Fletcher. Plus, I don’t know when he will be following me, or where I’ll be or anything to set up that kind of thing.”

I didn’t realize that she was serious until her face fell. “You would really do that?” I asked incredulously.

“Of course,” she replied with utter seriousness. “You know I would!”

“Still…”

“Yeah, it would take some planning, and we’d have to go fast the second you noticed he was following you again!”

“Okaaaayyy. I guess it couldn’t hurt to give it a try, but I still think it’s a long shot.”

“Yeah, it might be, but it would give us a good start if it works.”

“It would. At least we’d get somewhere on one mystery.” I bit my lip. “Let’s figure out how to do this.”

We worked on it for the rest of the night and came up with a shaky plan. We still had to figure out who was after Fletcher’s gold, who might have been involved in Clyde’s death, and why my dad thought we were being hunted.
