Chapter Twelve

Ella felt nothing. It should have panicked her but, oddly enough, she couldn’t even stir up enough emotion to feel a little anxiety over the fact that she felt nothing at all.

Literally nothing.

She was neither hot nor warm and not cold.

She was surrounded by such a thick and profound darkness that she wasn’t sure she’d opened her eyes even after she’d commanded herself to, had managed to blink several times.

Or at least thought she had.

She realized she didn’t actually know if she had a body.

After a great deal of searching, she finally realized that she could feel a floating sort of sensation, but what could she make of that?

Was she floating, suspended in water or maybe some other liquid something?

Or did she just feel as if she was floating because her mind was no longer a part of her body?

Or was it drugs?

The beginnings of distress and uneasiness had begun to work their way through her as she struggled to make sense of where she was. That increased when she turned her mind to trying to figure out how she’d gotten where ever it was that she was.

Her mind was almost as much of a vacuum as the darkness that encapsulated her.

Nothing. Nothing. And more nothing.

Her distress increased.

That told her several things.

She wasn’t dead as she’d begun to fear.

And at least part of the sensation of floating was from drugs of some kind.

And then, abruptly, memories began to flood into her mind and she knew where she was, remembered what had happened that had led to her capture and suddenly she wasn’t calm or floating any longer.

She was terrified and she was screaming and struggling to fight her way free of the wires and monitors, trying to find the opening.

Because she knew exactly where she was and what was happening.

She was in one of the containments.

Blaine knew exactly where he was when he woke up.

Despite the confusing eruption of images in his brain, his uncertainty as to whether it was actual memories of things that had happened or nightmares of the things he feared happening, there was no doubt of where he was or that it was a place he’d been before.

They’d put him in the tank.

And that could only mean that ‘they’ were the same people that had pulled him out of a body bag after the car bombing in Afganistan. And they’d tossed him into the primordial soup they’d thrown him into before.

The one they’d told him they’d concocted to insure rapid and complete restoration and regeneration after severe trauma to the body.

Like being blown to hell and gone.

The one keyed to his genetics.

But not his DNA alone or even entirely human.

Because he was 99.9% sure that this was the thing that had made him not entirely human anymore, that it was the mad scientist goo that had made him into a monster.

No way could he believe it was a completely different group of mad scientists!

And he still had trouble wrapping his mind around it.
