Teaghan

I had no idea how much getting rid of Priscilla would make me a happier person. I was the happiest I had been in a long time. Just seeing her missing posters plastered all over the school walls gave me butterflies. I felt an indescribable sense of power knowing that I was responsible for that. I knew the others didn't fully believe in the Shadow Boxes, but they would soon enough. Things were starting to look up. Maybe my father would even stop pestering me about going on meds.

After Gianna's little meeting, I decided to go by the novelty store. I'd never had a chance to thoroughly look around, and I had glimpsed some cool things in there. The bell jingled above the door as I entered.

Ava-Kaya came from the back. "Teaghan, hey."

"Hi," I replied as she leaned over the counter next to the register.

"How are things?" she asked.

I looked over a rack filled with candy bars with funny sayings. "Better now."

Ava-Kaya grinned slyly. "You mean better now that you've made use of your Shadow Box."

I nodded.

"I told you it was a gift."

I picked up a glittery box labeled Unicorn Food. "Yeah, it was. What do I do with the box now that I've used it?"

Ava-Kaya waved me over as if she had a secret to tell. I walked over to the counter and leaned in close.

"That's the best part," she whispered. "It's the gift that keeps giving. You can keep using it if you want."

My heart raced with excitement. "You mean I can give more people to the Shadows? I thought we could only use the box once."

Ava-Kaya nodded. "Don't tell the others, but I have the power to give one of you unlimited use of the box. Most people only want to use it once. They're not like you and me. They don't appreciate the power of the box. But a girl like you, someone who really believes and sees the good in it, will appreciate the box and use it over and over. As many times as you want."

The wheels in my mind began to turn. I thought of all the kids at school who were mean to me. Any time they hurt my feelings, I could send them away. I could do the same to the doctors and psychologist who were trying to put me on meds by making my father think I was crazy. This was a dream come true.

"Want that?" Ava-Kaya asked, pointing at the box of unicorn food I had placed on the counter.

"Yeah. How much?"

"Take it. On the house."

"Are you sure?" I felt as though she had already given me so much.

She nodded.

"Thanks." I took the box and headed for the door, already thinking about whom I could use my Shadow Box on next.

"Teaghan?" Ava-Kaya called as I pushed the door open.

"Yeah?"

"Now that I've done something for you, I'd like you to do something for me."

I let the door close and stepped back inside. The gift she had given me was amazing. I'd do practically anything for it.
