SEVENTEEN

True to his word, my breakfast was still warm when we got back to our table. I let my gaze roam the room and noticed that several of the guests were making a concerted effort not to notice us.

“How bad is it?” Tiger asked before downing the rest of her egg cream. “What are we looking at?”

“Well, the good news is that my food still tastes excellent,” I said, digging into the remains of my English Breakfast. “The beans are still warm, and the toast isn’t too soggy. The eggs are just right, and the black pudding is simply delectable. Overall, I would say the kitchen has outdone itself this time.”

She stared at me for a good three seconds.

“Well, isn’t that great,” she said. “We can die on a full stomach…wonderful. How bad is it, Gordon Ramsay? As in, how much damage are we looking at once we leave Ezra’s, or is the delectability of the food clouding that vision of yours?”

“Not in the least,” I said. “I’d prefer not using that aspect of my sight. It would create—”

Ezra came back before I could finish.

“Uluru is safely away,” Ezra said. “It would seem you have some new admirers. Perhaps the mark Char imparted to you is more a burden than a gift?”

“You think?” Tiger replied. “I know you have a strict, no-violence policy, but—”

“There will be no violence while you are within the walls of this establishment,” he finished, his voice low, but unwavering. “However, my compact only pertains to my domain—the interior of the deli.”

“You ever thought of expanding your borders a bit?” Tiger asked, still taking in the interior. “How about a few blocks square of non-violence territory? Like a cemetery. Aren’t cemeteries considered sacred ground?”

“You want Ezra to relocate the deli into a cemetery?” I asked. “Not exactly much of an attraction.”

“Cemeteries are sacred in as far as that they are spaces where ancestors are buried and respected. In that sense they can be considered sacred,” Ezra said, looking around the interior of the deli. “This place is not considered sacred. Rather through a series of agreements and treaties, it is designated the foci of neutrality in this city.”

“You’re saying this place is the ultimate neutral zone in the city?” Tiger asked. “This place? Really?”

“You expected somewhere else?” Ezra asked with a small smile. “It makes the most sense if you think about. People gather here to eat and enjoy delicious food without overt violence.”

“And plenty of covert threats.”

“This space transcends all rules established by the Councils or any organized body of authority,” Ezra said. “This location is the primal neutral zone.”

“So, no erasing any of our new fans while we’re still in this place,” Tiger answered while gazing at a particularly menacing group of individuals that looked perfectly capable of initiating a lethal conversation. “Because that group over there, looks extra-nasty.”

Ezra glanced over in the direction Tiger indicated, and they all looked away. He shook his head and turned back to us.

“No violence can or will occur in this space.
