PART FOUR:
Whisper Out Loud
“This call is for Lauren Grey. This is Detective Kimberley Christian with the police department here in Dallas County. I’m calling in regards to a Jamie Lee Barnes. You were listed as an emergency contact number on her cell phone.”
“Yes, detective, this is Lauren Grey, and what is this about, has something happened to Jamie?”
“I need to know, Ms. Grey, how you are connected to Ms. Barnes?” the detective asked.
“We are roommates and performers at a show club here in Dallas, so what is this about,” Lauren demanded.
“It would be better to speak with you in person about this. Would it be possible for you to come here to the station to speak with us?”
“Yes, but I want to know what this is about before I come down there.” Lauren’s anger was building.
“I’m sorry to tell you this, Ms. Grey, but a body of what appeared to be a female was found in a hotel room this morning. The identification and personal effects are that of Jamie Lee Barnes, who has a driver’s license noted as a male. The body has been sent to the county coroner for autopsy and final identification, and we were hoping you might be able to shed some light on the situation.”
Lauren held tightly to the phone, but couldn’t speak. The reality of what she was hearing confirmed her worst fears. She thought Jamie was still asleep in her room after a long night.
“Detective, maybe there is some mistake, let me check her room, she’s a late sleeper, and maybe she’s here. Hold on!” Lauren raced down the hall to Jamie’s room, her phone still in her hand, and opened the door. The room was undisturbed and the bed had not been slept in. Lauren spoke calmly into the phone. “Detective, I will come right down, just tell me where I need to go, Jamie never made it home last night.”
Lauren had a difficult time finding the location of the station house off McKinney Avenue. Traffic was terrible and she was distracted and distraught. She drove fast and carelessly, not even considering the reality of the moment. She was caught up in the thoughts of the last conversation she had with Jamie the night before. She didn’t want her to go, she could just feel it…she had known something was wrong. She said she was meeting him, but who was she referring to? Maybe it’s not her. Maybe she just decided to spend more time with someone and didn’t come home. Maybe her wallet had been stolen. It just can’t be Jamie.
Lauren was escorted into a small cubicle room with two desks and greeted by Detective Christian. She asked if she would like something to drink, and thanked her for coming so soon. Lauren was dressed as a male with faded jeans and a shirt. Except for the Samurai ponytail on top of her head, she could have passed as a college boy. The detective looked neither surprised nor hostile. The detective
