Chapter 16

Styx

Itrust you.

When the fuck had that happened? When had I gone from trusting no one to giving Corvin the very heart of me? I barely trusted Caius, and I’d known the man for… well, forever.

Yet somehow, in telling my story—really telling it—it made me realize that Corvin was nothing like…Odaar. He was nothing like the god who’d set this awful wheel into motion. He was nothing like Odaar’s children.

Corvin was good and safe and… The heat of his palms filtered into my cheeks, his steel-blue gaze like a spear directly into my heart.

I trust you.

Had I ever told anyone that? In all those years, in all that time, had I ever had faith in anyone?

My eyes trailed down to his lips. I couldn’t kiss him—not like I wanted to. We had things to do—him and me—and if I got sidetracked, I’d never get the courage to do them.

Still… I caught his bottom lip between my teeth, nipping just a little, needing that taste before I could get to my feet and walk straight to the gallows.

When had I gone from pushing him away to needing him closer? And I did. The thought of being away from him twisted a knife in my gut, which was why he would be going with me. He had to.

This would absolutely, positively suck, would likely cause bloodshed, and definitely a bruise or two… or five. And someone would definitely need stitches. Threading my fingers through Corvin’s, I got up, dragging him behind me as I continued on my course.

“Where are you going? Or rather—where are we going?” he asked, and unfortunately, I had to tell him the truth.

“Home,” I growled, eyes forward, shoulders back, headed for the portal that—if I had any luck at all—would not have Oberon guarding it.

“What do you mean home? Home is that way,” he said, hooking his thumb behind us.

Sighing, I halted my progress and stared up at the sky, hoping for an answer that didn't involve Tartarus at all. Unfortunately, this sky was ill-equipped to grant my wishes.

“I have to talk to Caius. I need fresh clothes. And weapons. And way more info than I currently have. Now that I know his name, I might be able to get information on his children. Caius might know something.”

I paused, wanting him to understand that this was our only option left.

“I've searched damn near all of the books Nadia gave us, and not only did I not find myself in any of them—not that I thought I would—I haven't seen his name once. That doesn’t give me a good feeling that I’ll find them at all.”

I couldn’t kill what I couldn’t find. And I couldn’t ask Caius if I couldn’t even say his name out loud.

Corvin pressed a kiss to the back of my hand, seemingly in awe at the sight of our fingers threaded together. “And you want me to go with you?”

That was such a loaded question. Did I want to go to Tartarus? Technically, yes. Did I want Corvin to be subjected to my family? A resounding no.
