Chapter 13

Flames prickled my fingertips.

My demonic side urged to show the asshole just what my blades could do, give him a taste of what he was choosing. The other—saner—one, however, warned that starting something when Breccan wasn’t himself would not end well for me.

Shit, from an almost reconciliation to this…

I reeled in the flames and stitched together the ravine that had opened inside me. Breccan didn’t deserve an emotional display. Of any kind.

“Thanks for working with me on the wards,” I said as steadily as I could manage when all I wanted was to scratch the soul-link mark above my heart until the damn thing bled. “I won’t bother you again.”

I could have sworn Breccan flinched at that last bit. “You can always come to me.”

Yeah, for business. I could come as far as Arista. At least she wasn’t acting like Yelena 2.0.

Maybe all lords were prone to volatile behavior. Though Breccan had sure as fuck kept his exceptionally well hidden until now.

I offered him a perfectly cordial smile. “Of course. You’re still my liege, and I have every intention of performing my duties.”

I didn’t bother to mask the acid that lurked beneath the words—the single liberty I allowed myself in this fucked-up situation. Judging by the expression that briefly flashed across Breccan’s face, I’d hit the mark. But there was no satisfaction in it. Nothing but rancid bitterness determined to corrode me from the inside out.

Without waiting to see if he would reply, I exploded into particles.

This time, even the wards couldn’t slow me on my way out.
