Our opportunity came sooner than I expected. When we heard the clanking of the lock and saw a pair of eyes peeking through the tiny glass window on the door, we knew it was now or never. Since the Priest was already at the station for the battle, he would most likely decide our fates before going back to Earth.

The door opened wide outwards, and I momentarily froze in place. There went our chance. Why hadn’t I expected this? There were at least five guards that I could count from my viewpoint, standing in a semi-circle blocking the door. They only budged a little, making way for Aiden and Brandon, who had entered the cell facing us head on. In their hands were the black weapons I’d seen when I initially entered the station through the hatch.

Seeing Aiden brought mixed feelings. On one hand, he’d held himself back at the arena, clearly not following through his orders to finish me off. On the other hand, he had me and my friends trapped here with our fates in his hands. The only consolation was that his face was covered in bruises and gashes. From me. My chest swelled with pride as he avoided meeting my eyes.

While we waited for either of them to say something, a commotion from the guards standing outside caught my eye. My jaw dropped when the Priest entered the room, wearing spotless, long white robes.

Screens in the stations didn’t do enough justice to the man’s perfectly sculpted face. His skin looked unnaturally silky, with a pointed chin and sharp jaw bones. How could a person’s face be so structurally beautiful?

But when he smiled, which he did a lot, it was difficult to appreciate his beauty. I wondered why his smiles never reached his eyes. Emerick had called him a prototype. Did that mean he was not human? What kind of prototype looked and acted so much like a human?

The Priest walked into the cell, grinning from ear to ear and holding his hands behind his back, looking all-important. Glancing around, he looked as if there were more than just three bare walls of a tiny cell.

When his eyes finally landed on the people in the cell, Glenn and Emma lowered their heads ever so slightly in a bow, while Erik bent himself at the waist in an exaggerated bow. He always had been a huge fan of the man, a bad influence on Jasper. Yet here he was, tagging along with us, going against the man he worshiped. It made me question his motives.

“You must be Cecilia’s daughter that Emerick told me about!” He chuckled, as if he was talking to an old friend. Despite his smile, his cold and sharp gaze made me want to run away from him. “Eyes just as defiant as your mother. She too never bowed to me.” Looking at the guards behind him, he repeated, “Never.”

Digging my nails into palms, I tried to keep my composure.

“I saw your fight. Impressive. Even our fierce General here couldn’t take you down easily.
