What was he doing? His inner beast snarled to be quiet. They’d had a perfect day… Now he wanted to talk about Adrius?

“I’m supposed to forgive two people to keep one of my boons from the gods,” he found himself saying. “If we meet them…you should probably know why there is bad blood there.”

The last thing she needed was to regret choosing him as a mate. He’d been careful not to talk about his past in too many specifics, sure that she was better off not knowing all the sordid details. But he couldn’t avoid introducing her to the rest of his family forever.

He told her the story between fireworks. Fae didn’t use gunpowder, she told him, but colored fire magic to create and shape the explosions of light. Each created a series of pops and booms that shook the ground, followed by cheers and whoops amongst the druids and their families.

It was easier to watch the lights than her face, though he did both, sure he was going to see judgment on her features. He started by speaking of Lucia’s betrayal and her master stroke to take Nyixa’s throne by banishing Nyah to what would become Adrun and poisoning Adrius so he would die for the first time.

“Adrius took the Shield Key when he wed Nyah and had it bound to him as a sign of devotion. It became a curse…because he couldn’t die,” he sighed.

“Shield magic isn’t supposed to be infinite…” she said uncertainly.

“When it’s contained within a Fell Key, it is.” And thus began the grim truth of his story. “Nyah was the reason he got out of bed every morning. To think that she was gone and he had to continue on…” An explosion of blue light haloed her face and her glossy hair, her bright eyes gently clouded in concern.

“I didn’t really understand. I didn’t have a mate, or really any woman I was close to.” But he did now, and for the first time, he held a glimmer of new sympathy for his brother. “He never moved on. Instead…he died a little inside each day. But he was still the rightful king of the vampire nation. By staying away from Nyixa, he forfeited his title for twenty years.”

Twenty years of Hell for them both. “We relocated far from the island. It was me, Adrius, and our friend Korin. Korin dove straight into a bottle of moonshine.” He scoffed, his nose stinging from the memory of the fumes coming off his best friend’s homemade swill. Regular alcohol wasn’t strong enough for a vampire, and Korin was the largest Blood Prince of them all. His escape from reality was a difficult one.

“So, it was basically Adrius and me,” he said, blowing out a sigh. “A huge side effect to his resurrections was that Adrius would continue to bleed from the wound that killed him last. It healed so slowly. He would go crazy with bloodlust or court madness waking up just one more night without his mate by his side.
