“You wanna drive? I got into a little accident yesterday. Been taking the bus everywhere.”

Eleanor nodded, jingling her keys as she stood up. I grabbed my coat and followed her out the door.

Go save the world again. And apologize to her for only having cheap beer.

I closed the door behind me and locked it. Eleanor was already down the hall and headed for the stairs.

“Our killer’s getting cocky,” I said to her as we bounded down the steps.

She shook her head in disbelief. “Four people in one hit… we better find some clues here, or the mayor’s going to have a fit.”

We hit the street, walking quickly to her squad car.

Another frigid night, this one had to be in the low forties. The wind didn’t do us any favors either, nearly blowing me down the street as I opened the passenger door.

Eleanor turned on the flashing lights, and we were off.

“I should put some of these on my car. Look at us go.”

Eleanor threw me a look. Then she cleared her throat.

“When we get there, I want you to look over everyone on scene. If anyone sticks out as a little sketchy to you, make sure you tell me.”

I nodded. It was doubtful we’d be able to tell simply by looking at a person. If whoever was killing these people was powerful enough to leave no traces, they were certainly powerful enough to make sure they weren’t leaking magic. Either way, this was getting out of hand.

Eleanor was right. We needed a clue here, some sort of slip-up on the killer’s part. If not, I might be back in jail.

I looked over at Eleanor, trying to get a read on her.

There was no way she would send me back, right?

I’d just given her a potential lead with that cop car thing, so that should keep me afloat for a little while longer until I could figure out how exactly this person was breaking in.

We pulled into the apartment complex a little before eight o’clock. It was a few stories high, but a rather small building. I hopped out of the passenger side as two officers approached us.

“Evening fellers,” I called over with a wave.

The one on the left, a bulky man with a stubby nose, turned to look at me. “You Jake Rogers?”

I gave him a mock bow. “The one and only.”

Stubby nose looked to his partner, who pulled out a pair of cuffs. “Jake Rogers, you are under arrest for burglary, trespassing, and theft.”

“What?” I asked, taking a step back.

“Don’t resist,” Stubby’s partner said gruffly as he grabbed me and twisted my arms around behind my back.

“Officers, what is going on here?” Eleanor asked.

Stubby nose nodded at me as his partner tightened the handcuffs. “There was a robbery not far from this location that took place earlier tonight. Mr. Roger’s prints were found at the scene.”

Eleanor looked at me. I looked back at her, confused as she was.

“Gentleman,” I started as they began to escort me to their squad car, “there must’ve been some sort of mistake.
