Chapter 15

As the roller coaster inched its way up the tracks, my stomach clenched. I was pretty sure I was going to puke.

Normally, I loved being at amusement parks. And an amusing park really would’ve made for a great third date – if the date was with someone who I actually really wanted to be with, that is.

But knowing that I was more prone to death than usual, I had a really hard time enjoying every roller coaster that Jeremy and I went on. I was beginning to worry about any little thing that could possibly go wrong. The rollercoaster could somehow run off the tracks or my seatbelt would snap at the worst possible moment.

It was just in the back of my mind that this would be it: the last second of my life, the moment that would not only kill me but that would also steal my mother and sister’s lives, too.

As the roller coaster reached the top of the tracks, Jeremy reached over and grabbed my hand. He gave it a little squeeze.

Completely thrown off by his touch, I didn’t have a chance to react before the roller coaster went plunging down its tracks.

I found myself screaming along with everyone else riding the roller coaster – everyone except for Jeremy, I noticed, out of the corner of my eye. He looked calm – calmer than one should look while riding a roller coaster.

Once we got off the ride, I couldn’t help but bring it up.

“Your reaction on roller coasters is very...different...from what I’d expect,” I commented.

He glanced over at me. “How do you figure?”

“You just seem completely unfazed by being on it,” I explained. “Like it’s no big deal.”

Jeremy shrugged. “What can I say? I know that, even on the off-chance that I did fall off, it wouldn’t kill me.”

“So, you think you’re invincible,” I noted.

“Well, I mean... I kinda am.” He paused and then added, “Soon, you will be, too.”

“But you – we – aren’t entirely invincible,” I insisted. “It’s still possible for us to die, even after we’ve made the change.”

“You’re right.”

“How can we be killed?” I asked, even though I knew there were other ways for us to die than murder. Like if Jax and I tried to form a bloodline, for example.

“There’s only one way. Chances are, you already know this. The legends are true.” Jeremy’s hazel eyes locked on mine. “The only way we can be killed is with a silver bullet.”

“I see.” I swallowed hard, knowing what this meant. My father was going to shoot Sal.

I only hoped that when he did it, when he carried out his plan to kill my sister’s husband, he didn’t do it in front of her. I really didn’t want to witness it, either, but I wasn’t sure if Zoe would be able to handle it. I was pretty sure it would destroy her.

As we walked to the next attraction, Jeremy glanced over at me. “Are you ready for the haunted house?”

I hesitated, glancing up at the sign, which read House of Horrors.
