“There, that wasn’t so bad, now was it?” Domingo asked, looking self-satisfied with his successfully teaching me to swim in a couple hours.

I shook my head as I treaded water. “No, I guess it wasn’t so bad.” I might have been furious about the way they chose to teach me, but learning a skill so quickly managed to temper my anger. I swam around for a bit, getting used to the new skill until the rowboat came into view. Then I climbed up the rope ladder and was immediately ordered to swab the deck again. I took any lingering annoyance out on the deck as I scrubbed at it. I was happy to have learned a new skill, but I couldn’t let the pirates know that. Hopefully, I would gain a few more before this journey was done.

Still, I wondered with each passing day when I would see the pirates being . . . well, pirates. It turned out I didn’t need to wait long to see the scourge of the seas at work.
