After lunch, my parents called it a day on my training. I went upstairs and took a nice hot shower. After putting on my clothes, I walked over to my night stand. I looked at my phone hoping Owen had texted or called me. It read: ONE NEW MESSAGE. My shoulders sank when it wasn’t from him. It was message from London: ‘School will be back open Wednesday. I really miss you, Avery. Xoxo’

I really missed her, too. I was missing everyone from my daily life. It had only been two days for me, considering I slept so long. But it had been four days total. Today was Sunday, so I had three days until I had to go back to school. How was I to get back, with my new-found life? What if I got upset like I had yesterday and blew someone through a wall?

I quickly went downstairs to where Mom and Dad were sitting at the table with Grandma.

“Mom, Dad, London sent me a text. School opens back up on Wednesday.”

“Well, we have three days. Starting tomorrow, we need to work on you staying calm under stress.” He then turned to Mom. “Call and have Tyler come home in the morning. He might be able to help us with her emotions.”

“How will Tyler help with my emotions?” I asked, perplexed.

Mom giggled at my question. “Honey, we all know he can get under your skin. He’s your big brother; it’s what they do. Plus, having Kage and your grandmother here might make it interesting,” she said with a grin.

“What do you mean more interesting?”

“Mom told me about you and Kage,” Mom said with a wink.

My eyes grew wide. “What do you mean?”

“It’s no secret he’s attracted to you, honey. We also know you’re attracted to him. You’re forgetting we not only can see the eyes, but read them.”

I had completely overlooked that. I couldn’t wait until I could do the same. It would make things a lot easier.

Heat rapidly rose in my cheeks. This couldn’t get any worse. So embarrassing.

“Well,” Dad said, with a huff. “As much as I hate it, I’d rather see you with one of your own kind, rather than that boy you’re with. He’s just so weird. What’s his name again? Ogton?”

I can’t believe this.

“Dad, his name is Owen. And he’s not weird, he just shy and different. Besides, I don’t think you have to worry about him. He won’t answer of my calls or texts.” I crossed my arms.

“I’m sure he’s just busy, honey,” she said with a reassuring smile.

“Yeah, maybe. I just have never gone this long without talking to him. Something feels wrong.”

Dad groaned and walked out of the room.

Mom came and sat down beside me. “Avery, your father is just worried about you being with a true mortal, that’s all. Humans are drawn to our immortality. Just like in all the stories hear about, vampires and such. Humans can become obsessed with us, and confuse it with love.”

“I don’t love him, Mom.
