Chapter Ten

Marcus

“Marcus Romano, we meet again.” Alexei rounds the mahogany desk in his office, sitting on the edge of it.

Truly, I don’t know which I hate more, the fact he’s almost only an inch away from me, or the ugly smirk on his face. I don’t like this guy. “It’s a very unpleasant, isn’t it?”

He shakes his head. “Not at all, my friend.”

I raise my hand, stopping him before he can mutter anything else that’ll make me cringe. “Enough with the bullshit. Let’s get straight to the reason why I’m here, shall we?”

He shrugs. “Suit yourself.”

“Word has it you haven’t found the missing shipment from a year ago.”

He takes him time to crack his knuckles before he answers. “I’m sure you really don’t need me to respond to that.”

“Don’t I?” I take a seat and cross my legs. “You could be lying for all I know.”

Alexei scratches his forehead, straightens up from the desk and rounds it back to his seat. “I could. What do you want?”

“Did you find out if the Valentes were involved in the missing shipment a year ago?”

“I didn’t.”

I scoff. “You were looking for a shipment worth millions, yet it didn’t cross your mind to check beyond the Bratva territory.”

He nods curtly. “Right.”

My fists clench. This is the reason I hate this guy, he’s so fucking arrogant for someone who became head of the Bratva only a year ago and thanks to my family. “Is there something you’re not telling me?”

He stretches his hands open. “Like what?”

“Don’t play smart with me, pretty boy.” I lean towards the desk, wearing my scariest scowl. “You won’t live another second if I find out you’re keeping anything from me.”

“That’s scary, big guy.” I seethe as I absorb the insult he just threw at me. Alexei is just as tall and muscular as I am. He wouldn’t call me big guy unless he’s aiming to get under my skin. “Listen, I only answer to your brother. Not you. And you don’t stroll into my territory and threaten me.”

I smile. The motherfucker’s real mad right now. “What will you do, big guy? Shoot me?”

“I would if you weren’t Dominic’s brother.” He pauses, raking his fingers through his hair. “I’ll give you this though, I’ve been looking into the Valentes to see if they’re good for business or not.”

Looks like we’re finally getting somewhere. “And, did you find anything?”

“Business hasn’t been going well for Victor Valentes since he returned to New York. The guys in Mexico refuse to do business with him because of your brother.”

“That’s not big news.”

“Of course, but this is where it gets interesting.” Victor reaches for his drawer, pulls it open and takes out some candy. “Want some?”

I roll my eyes. What does he think we are? Two high-school girls who’re besties or whatever they call it? “Get to the point, man.”

“He sold off some stuff a few months ago for half the price it was worth, still he made a lot of money with customers who agreed to do business with him anonymously.
