The bartender announces last call and Jack tips his hat to the ten or twelve people left in the bar who were politely applauding his last song of the night before walking slowly over to Carol, pretending he had just noticed her.

Knowing she can only hold Jack’s attention for so long before he gets bored, Carol starts talking a mile a minute.

She confesses.

Carol tells him about the girls Doug killed, how he cut off the head of one of the girls, and about helping him dispose of it after having sex with the head one last time.

For once, Carol can see that she has Jack’s full attention. His eyes are locked on hers in a way that she has never seen before.

After she tells him about the hooker she killed while the woman was going down on Doug, Carol stops.

She can’t catch her breath. Carol is as winded as an Olympic sprinter. In a way, that’s just what she was as she told the story — a sprinter racing to the finish line.

Jack swallows and excuses himself, glancing at the owner of the club who’s motioning Jack and the members of his band to walk with him to the office.

Jack looks back over his shoulder at Carol, giving her a tight smile, as he opens the door for the musicians.

Carol knows the band gets paid in cash every night, so she isn’t surprised that Jack has left her at the table.

He’ll be back, she thinks, I can be sure of that.
