Chapter 3

My heart stopped as I realized how risky it was. “They didn’t explain it to me like that.”

“I bet they didn’t.”

I had no idea if I would’ve still entered the tunnel if I’d known the risks. Who was I kidding? “I still would’ve done it.”

“And that’s what scares me the most.” Marcus sighed. “You’re always so gung ho, wanting to rush into a world you know nothing about.”

“I was created for this world.” I gripped his shirt in my hand. “Do you get that? I was created for this world of yours. I’m not human. I’m not like any of you.”

“That’s right. You’re not. And that scares me so much more.”

“Which is exactly why I need to find out who I am.” I gently hit his stomach with my fist. “I need to know what I am. I need to regain my memories.”

“And you think the guardians will just come out and tell you?” he asked. “Because you and I both know it doesn’t work like that.”

“I know. But I also know they can help me figure it out. Up until I reached them, I had no idea that feeling other people’s bad emotions wasn’t a curse. I healed people. Maybe that’s what I’m supposed to be able to do for you.”

Marcus swept my hair behind my ear. “But I’m not broken.”

“I’ve never said you’re broken. But you can’t remember who you are. Doesn’t that worry you? I mean, there’s something about who you are that has driven someone to such lengths to keep you from finding out.”

I nudged his stomach with my hand. “Who are you, Marcus?”

“I’m just a guy who doesn’t want to lose the woman he’s in love with.”

I sighed. “And I’m just a girl who wants to save the man she’s in love with.”

“Then, we want the same thing, don’t we?”

“Except I’m willing to do whatever it takes.”

“You’re not the one who’ll lose if things don’t go as planned.”

Leaning forward, I rested my head against his chest. “We can’t keep doing this.”

“I know.”

“Nothing changes if nothing changes.” I tilted my head back. “I can do this. I’m not afraid.”

Marcus curled his arms around my neck and pulled me against his chest. “Then, it looks like we better find somewhere safe for you while you’re in the astral plane.”

“Seriously?” I asked, tipping my head back again.

He nodded. “If you believe you can make it through, then I have complete faith in you.”

Standing on the balls of my feet, I kissed him. “You won’t regret this.”

Marcus tucked me under his arm as we headed toward the house.

No matter how much I tried to retract my wings into my back, they didn’t oblige. Flying was one thing, but it seemed that getting them to do anything else was another story completely.

“Want help with those?” Marcus asked as we neared the doorway.

“No,” I said a little too quickly.

He chuckled. “I wasn’t going to bite you if that’s what you were thinking.”

My heart rate went down a notch or three. “Thanks, but I think I’ve got this.
