Chapter 29

“I’m coming for you, Snow!”

The dark corridors of my castle are closing around me as my bare feet pound the tiled floor. Vacant hearths offer no heat as I run past the menacing eyes of my deceased relatives.

“Get back here, wench! Give me what’s mine!”

No. I have to keep running. I can’t let her catch me. If I fall into her hands again, it will surely be my end.

The dark halls of the castle morph into the quiet, shadowed alleys in Riverwood. I recognize the narrow path as the one that leads to the secret entrance to the Coven of Sin. Knowing safety is close, I push myself harder, pumping my arms by my sides, my legs burning from exertion.

The beaten, wooden door comes into view and I burst inside. But instead of a darkened room, I come face-to-face with King Lucian.

“Oh, thank God,” I cry out, rushing to him.

The lust king turns to face me, but the desire once filling his eyes is absent, disdain replacing any emotion they once held. “Do not touch me, wench. You are not worthy of my presence.”

“No,” I sob, shaking my head. “This can’t be happening.” I push around King Lucian and rush down the hallway to the door guarding the party room. The door hangs off its hinge as I run past it. Behind it, the party is going full force. Vampires and donors alike are dancing and singing. Goblets filled with wine or blood are raised in a toast.

“To the queen!” someone shouts.

My heart swells. Are they speaking about me?

“To the evil queen! May she succeed in her conquest to vanquish that traitor Snow from our lands!”

Traitor? Me?

Tears misting my vision, I keep to the shadows and scurry to the entrance of the castles. No guards protect the doorway, an odd occurrence, putting me on high alert. Cautious, I continue forward. At the top of the stairs, I’m met with an eerie sight. Not a soul is here. No guards flank the stairs. No donors to tempt the kings with their blood. No vampires leer or sniff at me.

It’s vacant.

My heart pounds in fear and I rush down the stairs, desperate to find someone, anyone. I spot the lowered bridge leading to the kings’ throne room and dash toward it. The silvery liquid once floating in the moat has been replaced by putrid, black water.

I screech when the portcullis almost slices me in two as it comes crashing down when I pass below it, and I run. I run so hard my vision blurs and my head becomes dizzy, but I don’t stop until I breach the throne room.

I jog down the aisle, the braziers flaring with bright flames until I reach the end. Any hope I had sinks into the floor and a lead weight drops into my stomach from the sight before me.

Surrounding a bed of white, the seven kings—wearing only their crowns—lean down over a slender woman. Their lips caress her naked skin. Her lithe body writhes under their touch, her moans echoing around me.
