See how it works? The word ‘but’ ends the dialogue. It says, ‘The first truth in this sentence is not nearly as important as the second truth’, and the people you speak to will question the sincerity of your initial praise, and begin to distrust you.

So, what if we were to switch out the word ‘but’ with the word ‘and’? With the same list of examples, the same message – using ‘and’ delivers it in a much more encouraging way. For example:

‘You presented well today, and you have to work harder at it.’

‘I liked how you spoke to the customer, and you need to work on your product knowledge.’

‘I love you, and I can’t stay.’

‘You are confident and sensitive.’

‘You’re the fastest on the team, and you miss many things.’

‘I respect your feedback, and we never have issues with our products.’
