Forde was completely spent and slept most of the way on the drive back to his house. He was so weak, the nurse had to ask the chauffeur for his help to lift him out of the limo into his chair.

Once they finally got him into his bed, Madison leaned down and kissed him. “I love you,” she whispered.

He opened his eyes and smiled. “I love you too.” His voice was soft and weak. He touched her face with a trembling hand. “I need to ask you something.”

“You can ask me anything you want later. We have to fly to Denver in a few hours, so you need to go to sleep now and get some rest. We can talk on the plane.”

His eyelids were heavy and droopy. “Ok, but can I ask you just one question?”

She took his hand from her face and kissed it. “Sure, but just one.”

“Will you marry me?” he said, staring into her eyes, but before she could answer, he drifted away, sound asleep.
