How do you feel about change? What strategies work best for you when dealing with these times of flux?

GRACE

Hello again, most grand and generous Angels. Gather close as we figuratively join hands and join hearts to come together for a little while of quiet reflection.

I come to you to talk about grace—such a lovely, nuanced word. As this sermon was percolating in my brain, I was focused on one meaning, but ever so many more have bubbled up to the surface.

The first meaning that came to mind was that grace is freely given, unmerited love. Now, Dearest, I want to assure you first and foremost that you are always deserving of deep and abiding love because sometimes we forget. We feel as though we’re just too flawed, too damaged. Grace is when we know that we are cherished in spite of, or maybe even because of, our human propensity to fall short of perfection. Know that even when you may not receive grace from the people around you, the Universe is surrounding you with unconditional love.

We can also have the power of being on the giving side of grace every time we embrace another when they sincerely and without malice stumble on their journey. As wise person Heather K. O’Hara said, “Do everything with gentleness, with kindness, with reverence. That is how grace moves. That is how love dances.”

Grace can also be an expression of thanks offered up before a meal. We appreciate all the love and work that went into getting our food from its source to our table and the fact that we have enough when others don’t. Grace and gratitude go hand in hand, whether we are in the light times or in the dark times. As wise person Oprah said, “When you meet obstacles with gratitude, your perception starts to shift, resistance loses its power, and grace finds a home within you.”

Sometimes we think of grace in terms of being unflappable—of having grace under fire. Those times when we dig way down and find that well of strength that resides within each of us, hold our head up high, and assert, “Not today, Satan!” with a snap and a hair flip. You may be a little rusty, but trust me—you have it in you. As wise person Ann Voskamp reminds us, “Grace is the weapon that disarms the dark.”

Finally, we come to grace as a description of carrying oneself with confidence and poise. I’m here to tell you, Angels, that while I have some good qualities, being genteel and graceful ain’t any of them. I can trip over my own two feet and will spit out my beverage if you make me laugh hard enough. But rather than fret about my lack of Audrey Hepburn-like carriage, I will take comfort in these wise words from Dana Dalgetty, who said, “Kindness is grace and grace is elegance.” We may not have the moves like Jagger, but we can all be kind.

In difficult times, I think we can
