Chapter Sixteen

Telling Bree that he’d “talk some sense into her” had apparently not been a good strategy. All Ryland had managed to do was rile her up even more so that the first half of their trip to Madisonville was spent in stony silence with her refusing to say anything.

The second half of the trip, they’d had a vigorous discussion about the case and her role in it. He’d finally gotten her to agree that it made sense for her not to go directly to the sheriff’s office to demand an update on the interrogation of Prosecutor Dane Palmer. Of course, that was partly based on him refusing to drive downtown.

Her personal car was in her garage. And since she’d gotten her spare key from her neighbor, there was nothing else Ryland could do to force her to not destroy her own career. But he’d used psychology to stall her for at least a few more minutes. He’d convinced her that if she wanted her boss to take her seriously and not fire her on the spot for ignoring his orders, she might want to change her clothes. Although she certainly looked great to Ryland, he doubted the T-shirt and jeans that Faith had brought her would add much weight to her argument that she was ready to get back to work.

As soon as Bree had disappeared into her bedroom, Ryland had been on the phone with Trent. He’d gotten to Bree’s house in record time, probably breaking all the speed limits between the sheriff’s office and her home. He’d managed to get here before Bree had come back out. Now he was sitting in the family room, giving Ryland an update.

And the information he had changed everything.

A door closed down the hallway. A few moments later, Bree rounded the corner into the family room, looking even better than the first time Ryland had seen her, which didn’t seem possible. Her incredible figure was impossible to disguise, even with loose pleated pants, a dark blouse that covered any hint of cleavage, and a navy-blue blazer that screamed professional businesswoman. It almost made him think he should have put on a suit instead of jeans. Almost. He really hated suits.

She’d done something with her beautiful blond hair too. It was tamed into some kind of fancy braid. And her fresh makeup emphasized her intriguing hazel eyes and plump pink lips. She was absolutely stunning.

“Hi, Trent.” She glanced curiously back and forth between them as she handed the UB credit card to Ryland. “I’ve grabbed my second set of keys, some cash and my emergency backup credit card from my safe. I don’t need the UB card now.” She moved past him and sat in the chair facing him and Trent on the couch. “What’s going on? Trent, are you heading downtown with us?”

“No. He’s not,” Ryland said, finally finding his voice. “We’re not going downtown.”

“I’ll, uh, just head out,” Trent said. “I’ve got a few more things to look into.”

“Text me any updates,” Ryland told him.
