Chapter 23
Like the morning view from the deck of the torpedo boat destroyer and from the porch of the Brooks House, the vista from the fantail of a dilapidated steamer chugging over a brilliantly blue sea was just as welcoming, but the concern differed. Borodin enjoyed his coffee while inhaling the sea air and watching the boiling wake trailing behind the shipâs propeller. That said, he still had the radio report from last night on his mind. He turned from the view and looked at that message held down by the coffee pot. The message detailed the results from last nightâs action. Two men wounded with one severely injured and one aircraft slightly damaged. Once the two aircraft pounced on the sailing vessels from above, the dilapidated tramp steamer moved in and deployed a squad of raiders who subdued the survivors and took control of the sailing vessels. He brought the cup to his lips while thinking about the next twelve hours, and the failure of their main objective. His thoughts, though, were disturbed by Captain Lagos, who stepped around the corner of the superstructure. He held a folded piece of paper in his hand and wore an intriguing look on his face.
âGood morning, Issak,â Borodin said as he lowered the coffee cup and reached for the pot on the table. âPlease, sit and explain that unsettled look.â
Reaching for a chair, Captain Lagos sat as Borodin filled his cup. Lagos accepted the coffee while placing the folded paper on top of the first message before Borodin put the pot back on top of the messages.
After a long sip, and a sigh, he answered Borodin. âIt appears that since the intervention at Bagay Alto, our friend was able to reconfigure his assetâs appearance to a point where it was not recognized by the captain of the destroyer. Our friend remained in the area long enough to greet the American vessel and keep him occupied while the sailing vessels put distance between them and the naval vessel. Our motorized asset is now approaching Buyan, and the sailing vessels are not far behind.â
âVery good, Issak,â Borodin said with a smile. âBut that is the good news. Of the bad news, I already know that our target, the man called Fowler was not among them, so I was just thinking how well our acquaintance Rodham can assist us in that matter.â
Captain Lagos sighed. âAgreed, but we have a matter closer to home. The Americans, with their variety of arms, put up a formidable resistance, and we just suffered a fatality. The gunner should make it, although without a leg. Unfortunately, the copilot died thirty minutes ago.â
Borodin turned his eyes back to the boiling wake while Captain Lagos continued.
âAmong that variety of weapons, the Americans had a six-pounder, which they put to good use. The gunners landed a shot that went through the nose of one of our aircraft, through the copilotâs chest and the leg of the standing gunner behind him before exiting the stern section of the craft without exploding.
