EVERYONE SETTLES IN to eat dinner. It’s getting harder and harder to get them all to sit down at one table. The tension in the air is palpable. Like a living breathing string that can be cut and erupt into chaos at any moment. Seraphina refuses to eat beside any of them. Actually, she has refused to even leave her room anymore. Arelia has already put aside a plate for her friend who is probably scouring the internet looking for clues on Nate’s whereabouts on her laptop. Solange sits at the edge of the table as always, but Dara has begun to sit on the opposite end beside Uriel. The two have already began their sarcastic banter and snickering, leaving Ariel to sit at the right hand side of Solange. Arelia never really knew her place. The feuds between them never involved her. It all happened centuries before she became part of their crew. At times, it still doesn’t feel like she is a part at all. She isn’t an Angel of God after all, she is only Nephilim. She is still human. Humans are always beneath them. Except Seraphina, but then again she’s like no Nephilim the world has ever seen.

With a platter of sandwiches between her hands, Arelia descends the two steps into the dining room, when the room changes.

The smell of smoke invades her nostrils. Smoke and… rotten garbage. There must be Demons around. The real nasty kind that remain only in Hell. Only Hellish Demons would smell so purely disgusting. It stings at her nose as she runs. She is screaming she realizes. Screaming her head off so much her throat has grown hoarse.

“Seraphina!”

She’s screaming for her friend. Screaming like her life depends on it. Her feet pound the ground beneath her, but it still might not be fast enough. She must reach her in time. She must.

Pain. The pain in her chest chokes the air from her throat. Falling. The feeling of free falling as gravity tugs her back down to Earth. The sky is blue above her as she stares up at it. A few stray clouds, but a beautiful day. The pain in her chest has turned into a burning sensation. She can’t move. Her hands are numb, she can’t feel her feet. Actually, the only thing she can feel is the pain in her chest.

“Seraphina.”
