Cat asked, âEd, do you have the address of the restaurant?â
âYeah, I do. Itâs in the BOLO on my desk. Iâll get it.â
âAlso, the address for the vet clinic.â Cat booted her computer and pulled up a map of Clinton and the surrounding counties while she waited.
When Ed handed her the two addresses, he said, âRoger is still on the phone with the vet. From his end of the conversation, a substantial quantity of drugs was stolen.â
She plugged the locations into the search engine. Ryan, Nicki, and Ed looked over her shoulder at the computer screen.
âDamn!â Cat said as the pins dropped on the map. The two locations were only five miles apart.
âThatâs too much of a coincidence. A burglary and a woman missing. Either on his way to the clinic or on his way back, he stopped, and my money is on a stop after the burglary,â Nicki observed.
âI have to agree,â Ryan replied as he studied the computer map.
âEd, what time where her keys and purse found?â Cat asked.
He examined the BOLO and said, âThe 911 call came in at 1:20 a.m.â
Suddenly, her sense of trepidation was amplified by that riveting tug on her thoughts. Cat had planned to head to the hospital to check on the victim from the robbery. Now, she felt compelled, pushed to take a trip to the restaurant and vet clinic. âI want to check both locations. Anyone interested in tagging along?â
âI canât. Roger and I have interviews with the hostages from last night,â Ed said.
Ryan glanced at Nicki. âIâll flip you for it.â
âNo, you go. I have another search program running and need to stay here,â Nicki said.
âMy carâs in front unless you want to drive,â Cat said.
âNo, but I do need to grab some gear from my car.â
Cat stepped into Kevinâs outer office. His door was closed, and Jessie wasnât at her desk. She headed back to the conference room.
âEd, would you tell Kevin where weâre going? His door is closed, and I donât want to interrupt. Iâm sure heâs knee-deep in trying to fix the mess the mayor handed him.â
It didnât take long to reach the restaurant. A sheriffâs patrol car was parked in front of the building. A wrecker was leaving the parking lot with a vehicle hooked to a tow bar. Probably the victimâs car, Cat thought.
A deputy sheriff walked out as they exited the car. After the introductions, Cat explained the missing woman could be connected to their investigation of several homicides.
Unfortunately, he had little information to add to what they already knew, though he provided the names and addresses of the two people who had found the womanâs purse and car keys.
Ryan, followed by the deputy, went inside to interview the staff and obtain a list of employees who had worked the night shift.
Cat began a search of the small parking lot that was edged by bushes and several trees. Leaves of burnt orange, crimson red, and shades of green all mixed for a visual wonderland of color.
